What is Overlay Mosaic Crochet

Overlay mosaic crochet is a technique that uses two colours and simple stitches to create stunning colourwork designs that look intricate but they’re really easy to do! It’s a brilliant technique once you’ve got a pattern or two under your belt, and exactly what every design below is built on.

The overlay mosaic crochet technique uses the front loops and back loops to create a beautiful textured colourwork project. You work each alternate row or round in a different colour using a combination of two stitches: the US single crochet in the back loops only; and the US mosaic double crochet (Mdc) in the front loops only of the stitch two rows/rounds below the current row/round.

The single crochet will always be worked into a stitch of the other colour, whilst the mosaic double crochet stitches are worked into a stitch of the same colour.

In UK terms, the stitches are double crochet in the back loops only; and Mosaic treble crochet.

When you work mosaic crochet in rows, you need to cut your yarn after each row. However some patterns are worked in the round, so you can just leave the yarn hanging behind your work, ready to be picked up again for the next round. This means less ends to sew in!

Both types of overlay mosaic crochet feature in this collection.

Mosaic double crochet (Mdc)

  1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the unworked front loop of the stitch from the row below the one you would normally work into (it will be the same colour as the yarn you are using).
  2. Yarn over and pull through.
  3. Yarn over and pull through two loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the stitch.

FAQs

Q: What is mosaic crochet?

A: Mosaic crochet is a technique which uses 2 different colours of yarn and simple stitches. This post features overlay mosaic crochet patterns, but you can also get inset mosaic crochet too. In overlay mosaic crochet, we use one colour per row and always work on the right side. In inset mosaic crochet, we change colour every 2 rows and work backwards and forwards.

Q: Is mosaic crochet hard for beginners?

A: Mosaic crochet is more approachable than it looks, since you only ever work one colour per row, and use basic stitches. That said, some patterns are more beginner-friendly than others: smaller, simpler designs are a great place to start before moving on to larger or more detailed pieces.

Q: What can you make with mosaic crochet?

A: Mosaic crochet works beautifully for almost anything: accessories like headbands and bags, home items like blankets, cushions, and placemats, and even decorative pieces like baubles and advent calendars.

Q: Are there free mosaic crochet patterns available?

A: Absolutely! This page brings together a full collection of free mosaic crochet patterns, ranging from quick small makes to bigger statement pieces, all designed to help you explore the technique at your own pace.
