Celebrate your love for crochet with this bold and modern Hooked on Crochet wall hanging pattern! Featuring playful lettering and a stylised crochet hook motif, this design is perfect for brightening up your craft space—or gifting to a fellow yarn-lover who’s just as obsessed as you are. Because let’s face it… we’re all a little hooked on crochet, right?

I love crochet and making beautiful crochet soft furnishings, blankets and pillows! But I reckon there’s not enough crochet to go on the wall! AND we also don’t shout about our love of crochet enough either! Let’s change that and make some crochet wall art!

Made using cotton yarn and the waistcoat stitch (for that gorgeous knit-like texture), this project has a clean, graphic look that really makes the words pop.

This pattern includes clear, step-by-step instructions to help you create a beautiful modern wall hanging. There’s also a video tutorial to help you with any tricky bits!

I loved designing this bold crochet pattern, almost as much as I love crochet! It’s just so much fun and I can’t wait to hang it on the wall! I made it in yellow and grey to match our living room too!

How do you make a crochet wall hanging?

This easy crochet wallhanging is just a simple rectangle.

Using 2 colours and the waistcoat stitch, it is worked in turned rows, changing colour and carrying the yarn as required to create the bold design.

After that, a single crochet border is added to complete.

2 crochet rectangles with the words hooked on crochet on it are laid on top of each other

Yarn

I made 2 versions, but you can use any weight of yarn in 2 colours:

Sport weight – Schachenmayr Catania, 100% cotton (50g/1.76oz, 125m/137yds) – unfortunately now discontinued (see page 4 for alternatives)

Worsted weight – Paintbox Yarn Cotton Aran, 100% cotton (50g/1076oz, 85m/93yds)

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your wallhanging. I would recommend a cotton or cotton blend to create a sturdy wallhanging that won’t stretch too much. You’ll need around 200yds of colour A and 100yds of colour B for your wallhanging.

Here are a few alternative options that you might consider:

Yarn and Colors Must-Have, 100% Cotton (50g/1.76oz, 125m/137yds)

Animation DK, 100% Cotton (50g/1.76oz, 127m/139yds)

Lion Brand Coboo, 50% Cotton, 50% Bamboo (100g/3.5oz, 212m/232yds)

Supplies you will need

Crochet Hook needed to meet the gauge (3mm for sport weight, 5mm for worsted weight).

tapestry needle for working in ends

Scissors

Stitch Markers

Card for backing or a picture frame to put your wallhanging in.

Sizing

I made two different sizes with different weights of yarn. Your wall hanging may be a different size depending on the yarn you use.

Sport weight: 9 inches tall x 11.5 inches wide (23cm x 29cm)

Worsted weight: 12.5 inches tall x 16 inches wide (32cm x 41cm)

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your modern wall hanging crochet pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes mosaic crochet charts, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.

PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.

Included in the ad-free premium pattern:

  • A 13 page downloadable and printable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions in US and UK crochet terms
  • Colour stitch chart
  • Detailed stitch guides and tips for perfect results
  • Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
  • Pattern support if needed
  • An accompanying video tutorial

Difficulty level is Easy.

Tension:

Your gauge will differ depending on the weight of yarn you choose. As long as the fabric is quite dense, but not tight enough that the hook won’t go through the waistcoat stitch, then you’re good to go with this project.

Customising to Make your Crochet Wall Art Perfect for You

This project is perfect for using up your stash! Use any weight of yarn in any colours to really make it yours! Just try to stick to cotton or a cotton blend for a sturdier finish.

Pattern Notes

Be sure to read through these notes before you start your tapestry crochet wall hanging – they will make it so much easier to understand the pattern!

  • Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
  • The stitch count is the same throughout [60] to create a rectangle.
  • Beginning ch1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Change colour on the last yarn over of the previous stitch. Enclose the unworked yarn in your stitches as you work, dropping them when not needed for the remainder of the row, ready to pick up again on the next row. Carry the yarn on the WS of the work. See the video tutorial for further guidance.
  • Even number rows are RS rows.
  • If you’re left-handed, you could skip the first row to ensure the wording comes out the right way.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your easy crochet hanging pattern.

Waistcoat stitch (Wc)

The crochet waistcoat stitch creates a beautiful knit-look texture using simple single crochet worked through the “V” of the stitch. To work the waistcoat stitch in rows:

  • Locate the ‘v’ of the stitch, which is underneath the horizontal bars, much lower than you would normally work.
  • Insert your hook into the ‘v’ and push it straight through.
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop.
  • Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the stitch.

You can see this process in full detail in this waistcoat stitch video tutorial.

  • Attach the wallhanging to dowelling at the top and bottom using yarn B. then add a hanger.
  • Place the wallhanging in a photo frame.
