We used to have a silver birch tree in our garden and one of the first signs of the start of autumn was the small shaped leaves starting to fall, and it was so pretty. This is why I’ve chosen this birch leaf pattern for these crochet autumn leaves. They have such a beautiful shape.
It’s one of the appliqué motifs in my Autumn Landscapes Crochet Picture Set, but it’s just as at home stitched onto a jumper, scattered across a blanket, or used in a design entirely your own.

Yarn
For this birch leaf pattern, you will need small amounts of Scheepjes Catona, 100% Mercerized Cotton (50g/1.76oz, 137yds/125m) in Yellow Gold 208, Primrose 522 or any yellow, brown and orange shades.
Yarn Alternatives
This pattern is designed to be used with 4ply/sport weight yarn, but you can substitute for any that you prefer. You only really need small amounts of lots of the colours, so now is the perfect time to use yarn from your stash! Whilst I used cotton, you can equally use acrylic or wool for this design. Just remember to adjust your hook size to match if necessary.

What Special Crochet Stitches are Used to Make these Crochet Autumn Leaves?
Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog)
A single crochet 2 together is also known as a decrease and it is used to decrease the number of stitches on a row. By using an sc2tog you will go from 2 sts down to 1 st and we use this in this pattern to create the leaf shape.
- Insert hook into the next st.
- Yarn over and pull through.
- Insert your hook into the next st.
- Yarn over and pull through (you will now have 3 loops on your hook rather than the normal 2 for a single crochet).
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
