Mosaic Crochet Chart For A Sunflower

This summer we visited France and stayed in a rural area where there were field upon field full of sunflowers, all gazing in the same direction. This mosaic crochet chart for a sunflower allows you to create a whole field of sunflowers just like in France.

Sunflowers are such a celebration of summer and this is why I wanted to create a mosaic crochet sunflower for the Mix and Match MAL 2026, hosted by Elimee Designs. It’s all about celebrating the four seasons through mosaic crochet. Whether you choose to make a scarf, bag or blanket, this sunflower motif is surely going to make you smile!

More About this Overlay Mosaic Crochet Pattern

The sunflower motif featuring on this mosaic crochet pattern is made using overlay mosaic crochet.

This is a beautiful crochet technique, which uses only the single and double crochet stitches to create amazing designs. Whilst it may look super complicated, it really isn’t. If you can do these simple stitches and can identify the front and back loops, then you will definitely be able to make this pattern.

This sunflower motif uses the same 48-stitch repeat as all of the Mix and Match MAL motifs, so it will fit together beautifully with any of the other designs, whatever combination you choose to make.

I’m excited that my overlay mosaic crochet sunflower motif is part of the Mix and Match MAL 2026, hosted by Elimee Designs — a mix-and-match make-along bringing together six designers and thirteen overlay mosaic motifs, all celebrating the four seasons through mosaic crochet.

Rather than following one fixed pattern, you choose which motifs to make, how many, and in what order, since every motif shares that same 48-stitch repeat, so they combine however you like into a blanket, scarf, bag, wall hanging, or whatever else takes your fancy.

The MAL is evergreen, so there’s no fixed window to work within: the free graphs, including this sunflower one, go live on 1st October 2026 and will always stay free, whilst two bundles are available right now if you’d like to get your hands on everything in one go.

Overlay Mosaic Crochet

Overlay mosaic crochet is created by working into the back loops and front loops of different stitches. You work each alternate round or row in a different colour using a combination of two stitches: the US single crochet in the back loops only; and the US double crochet in the front loops only of the stitch two rows/rounds below the current round or row.

The single crochet will always be worked into a stitch of the other colour, whilst the mosaic double crochet stitches are worked into a stitch of the same colour as the one you are using. Amazingly though, we will only use one colour per round or row.

Overlay mosaic crochet is worked from right to left (for a right-handed crocheter) on the front of the work only. This means you would normally need to cut your yarn at the end of each row, and therefore have lots of ends.

Luckily though, there is the wonderful creation that is the envelope border, which we can add at the end. This encloses all of the ends in a lovely crocheted border, so we don’t have to weave in all of those ends. Or you could create tassels with the ends! Working in the round also eliminates all those ends as we can float the yarn up the inside.

Materials

It really depends on the design you want to make but here is the yarn I used for my sample:

• Stylecraft Special DK, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.5oz, 295m/323yds).
• 4mm Crochet Hook or hook needed for your yarn
• A tapestry needle for working in ends
• Scissors

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your crochet strip.

Mosaic double crochet (Mdc)

1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the unworked front loop of the stitch from the round below the one you would normally work into (it will be the same colour as the yarn you are using).
2. Yarn over and pull through.
3. Yarn over and pull through two loops.
4. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the stitch.
