You may have noticed the image above also shows some crochet Easter baskets. If you want to crochet a basket for the eggs to go in, check out my free crochet Easter Basket pattern! It makes a great Easter hunt gift set altogether.

I’m trying to be good with food at the moment! We have had so many chocolates from Christmas that I think we’ve just been eating them everyday! And now we’ve coming up to Easter and the thought of more chocolate is a bit overwhelming! Because if they’re in the cupboard, I’m definitely going to want to eat them! So I think having crocheted eggs is a fab idea.

I also think the eggs and baskets look really great as part of an Easter display – I’ve got some little Easter bunnies and other eggs (non-crochet) that I’m going to use as well to make an Easter table scape when we get to the holidays!

How is the Large Crochet Egg Pattern Made?

This crochet egg is really quick to make! We start by working the egg in spirals into a magic ring.

Then we work various increases and decreases to create the shape whilst also creating that beautiful woven effect.

We finish by stuffing the egg and closing the hole!

Tension:

Tension is not important for this project. As they are so quick to make, just try making one and see if it comes out the right size.

If your sample egg is bigger than the size given, try with a smaller hook size. If your egg is smaller than the size given, try with a larger hook size.

Creating your Perfect Easter Egg

You can make your eggs any size you like!

The easiest way to change the size of your eggs is to use a different weight yarn with a corresponding hook. Be sure to choose a hook that is at least 1 size smaller than the recommended size.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your easy crochet egg.

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

Watch a video tutorial of the Magic Ring here.

Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)

A single crochet 2 together is also known as a decrease and it is used to decrease the number of stitches on a row. By using an sc2tog you will go from 2 sts down to 1 st and we use this in this pattern to create the top of the egg, working in the blo.

  1. Insert hook into the next st.
  2. Yarn over and pull through.
  3. Insert your hook into the next st.
  4. Yarn over and pull through (you will now have 3 loops on your hook rather than the normal 2 for a single crochet).
  5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Watch a video tutorial on how to do the single crochet 2 together for more guidance.
