How is this Crochet iPad Cover Made?

This ipad crochet case is made from 12 individual granny squares, each worked in three rounds using three (or as many as you want) yarn colours.

The squares are seamed together into two panels of six, which are then joined along three sides to form the cover. A simple edging is worked around the top opening, finished with a button loop and button for a secure closure.

Yarn

Cygnet 100% Cotton DK, 100% Cotton (100g/3.5oz, 200m/219yds) in Golden 3184 (A), Spring 6711 or Smokey Purple 4233 (B), and White 2080 (C).

Yarn Alternatives

This pattern is designed to be used with a DK weight cotton blend. However, you can use another yarn weight if you are happy for the cover to be a different size.

Here are a few alternative options you might like:

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your Dahlia Tablet Cover pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes assembly diagram, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.

PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.

Tension

3 rounds of the granny square = 3.5 inches (9cm) square.

If your sample square is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your square is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

What Special Crochet Stitches are Used to Make this Easy Dahlia Tablet Cover?

3 treble-cluster

The 3tr-cl stitch is used to create the petal shape. The 2tr-cl is made in the same way with 1 less treble.

  1. Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  3. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (1 petal part-created).
  5. Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the same stitch.
  6. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  7. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  8. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 petals part-created).
  9. Repeat steps 5 to 8 again (3 petals part-created).
  10. Yarn over.
  11. Pull through all 4 loops on your hook to complete the 3tr-cl.

Watch a YouTube tutorial of the 3tr-cl.

Stacked double crochet

The stacked dc is a lovely way to start a round without a chain. It creates a cleaner, straighter edge for your crochet projects without gaps or uneven edges. To create a stacked treble, simply stack another single crochet on top.

  1. Insert your hook straight into the very first st of the row/round without chaining first.
  2. Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a single crochet).
  3. Insert your hook now into the vertical bar of the single crochet st that is furthest from your hook side.
  4. Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a stacked double crochet).
  5. Watch a YouTube tutorial of the stacked double crochet here

Invisible join

An invisible join is a ‘fake’ stitch that replaces the slip stitch join and creates a smooth finish. If you prefer though, use a slip stitch.

Cut your yarn leaving a 4” / 10cm tail and pull the tail all the way through the last stitch. Thread this end onto a needle. Insert your needle under both of the top loops of the first stitch of the round, as you would with your hook for a normal sc. Pull tight, but not too tight. Then insert your needle into the top of the last stitch you crocheted, straight down through the middle. Pull tight, but try to make the ‘fake’ stitch you’ve created the same size as the other stitches. Weave in the end to secure.

Watch the invisible join YouTube tutorial here.

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

Watch the magic ring YouTube tutorial here.

Flat slip stitch seam

Lay 2 squares next to each other with RS facing up and put a slipknot on your hook:

  1. Insert your hook into the back loop of the st on the panel nearest you, then insert your hook into the back loop of the corresponding st on the panel furthest from you. These are the 2 loops nearest the table or the inside loops.
  2. With the yarn held between the 2 squares and to the underneath, yarn over.
  3. Pull through both loops and the loop on your hook, keeping your tension fairly loose.
  4. Continue across your seam, keeping the yarn underneath throughout.

Watch the flat slip stitch seam video tutorial here.

Customising your Crochet iPad Cover

The cover is designed to fit a standard iPad or tablet snugly, but there are a couple of simple ways to tailor the fit to your own device.

HEIGHT: If your tablet is taller, feel free to add more rounds to the Top Edging before you begin Round 3, to make the opening deeper.

SIZE: You can make your individual granny squares larger by using a different yarn and hook. Simply experiment to get the size you need, or how about adding a few more rounds to your edging before joining the 2 blocks together.

COLOURS: Make each of your 12 squares in different colourways for a scrappy, mismatched look, or keep to one palette for a bold, uniform finish.

Granny Squares

Make 12, either all the same colours, or 6 of each using different colours for yarn B (or make them all different and have fun with it).

With Yarn A, make a mr.

Round 1: stacked dc, 11dc in ring, join with an invisible join, fasten off. [12dc]

Round 2: join Yarn B in blo of any st, stacked tr in blo, 2tr-cl in blo of same st, (2ch, 3tr-cl in each blo) around, 2ch, join with an invisible join, fasten off. [12 x 3tr-cl, 12 x ch2-sps]

Round 3: join Yarn C in any ch2-sp, stacked dc, 2dc in ch2-sp, *3dc in next ch2-sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch2-sp, 3dc in each of next 2 ch2-sps, rep from * 3 times, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in last ch2-sp, join with an invisible join, fasten off. [8 x 3dc, 8 x 3tr, 4 x ch2-sps]

Block squares to size.

If you’re enjoying this floral granny square, take a look at my other patterns that use the same design:

Assembly

Working on the right side with squares side by side and using a flat slip stitch seam and yarn C, join the squares together as shown. Make 1 vertical join first and then 2 horizontal joins to join 6 squares together. When doing the joins, after joining the first 2 squares, do not fasten off, but bring in the next 2 squares to continue the seam.

Repeat with other 6 squares.

Join Front and Back

You now have 2 blocks consisting of 6 squares each. Work a round of sc around your blocks making 1sc in each st, 2sc in each square corner, and 3sc in each of the 4 outer block corners.

Place the 2 blocks of 6 squares together RS facing.

Working around 3 sides of the blocks only, sc through both blocks to join together working in the outside loops only (these are the loop nearest you on the first panel and the loop furthest from you on the second panel). Work into 2 of the corner sc at the top on each side.

Turn cover right way round.

Top Edging

Continue where you finished your seam.

Round 1: ch1, sc in each st around the top of the tablet cover, working 1sc in each st and 1sc in each side seam, ss in first st to join. [62]

Round 2: ch1, sc in each st around, ss in first st to join.

If your tablet is taller, feel free to add more rounds to make it fit.

Round 3: ch1, 46sc, ch8, skip 1 st, 15sc, ss in first st to join.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew on a button to the side opposite the ch8 loop.

FAQs about this iPad Crochet Case

Q: Is this crochet iPad cover pattern suitable for beginners?

A: Yes, this pattern is suitable for confident beginners. Each granny square is worked in just three rounds, with no shaping and simple seaming, making it a great introduction to a few new stitches.

Q: Can I use a different fibre of yarn to cotton?

A: Yes, though cotton or a cotton blend is recommended as it gives the cover more structure to protect your device. If you use a different fibre, be sure to do a gauge swatch first, as your finished size may vary.

Q: Can I adjust the size of the crochet iPad sleeve?

A: Yes! If your tablet is taller, simply work extra rounds in the Top Edging before Round 3 to make the opening deeper. Do check the finished measurements against your own device before you start and see the section about customisation for more options.

Q: What’s the difference between the free and premium version of this crochet ipad cover pattern?

A: The free version on the blog has the full written pattern in US terms. The premium PDF adds an assembly diagram and stitch tutorials, and is ad-free and printable, plus it’s available in both UK and US terms.

Q: What yarn weight does this iPad crochet case use?

A: This pattern is written for DK weight (category 3) cotton yarn. Any DK cotton or cotton blend will work well — just make sure to check your gauge swatch first.
