Every year at Easter, we meet up at my parents house and have a wonderful day hunting for chocolate eggs, following clues, eating a lovely dinner and generally having a lovely time. We have used various Easter baskets for collecting the eggs over the years, but we’ve never had something that stood the test of time! That’s why I’ve created this free crochet Easter Basket pattern in bulky yarn.
This chunky crochet Easter basket is quick, beginner-friendly, and perfect for holding Easter eggs, treats, or gifts! Made with bulky weight yarn, it works up fast and looks amazing in any colour. Plus it’s a great stash buster project too!
This pattern includes clear, step-by-step instructions to help you create a stunning Easter basket with ease. There’s also a video tutorial to help you on your way!

You may have noticed the image above also shows some crochet Easter eggs in the basket. If you don’t fancy chocolate eggs, or want something that lasts a bit longer, have a go at my free crochet Easter egg pattern too!
I think the baskets look really great as part of an Easter display – I’ve got some little Easter bunnies and other eggs (non-crochet) that I’m going to use as well to make an Easter table scape when we get to the holidays!
How is the Small Crochet Easter Basket Made?
This crochet basket is really quick to make! We start by working the base of the basket in spirals. Once the base is the correct size, we start working the sides of the basket, creating the woven effect.
At the top we add a pretty twisted edging.
And finally we create a simple handle and attach it to the basket.

You will need:
Paintbox Yarns Simply Super Chunky, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 60m/66yds) x 1 ball
9.0mm Crochet Hook or hook needed for your yarn
Tapestry needle for working in ends
Yarn Alternatives
There are so many options for yarn for your Easter Basket. You only need approximately 50yds of super bulky weight yarn for this project, so this is a great opportunity to use yarn from your stash.
Here are a few alternative options:
MillaMia Naturally Soft Super Chunky, 100% Merino Wool (100g/3.53oz, 50m/55yds)
King Cole Big Value Super Chunky, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 81m/89yds)
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool (170g/6oz, 97m/106yds)
Sizing
Basket: 4.5in (11.5cm) diameter x 3.5in (8.5cm) tall
Handle: 8in (20.5cm) long
How to get the pattern
There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet Easter Basket pattern.
You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.
Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.
PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.
Included in the premium pattern:
- A 10 page downloadable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions in US and UK crochet terms
- Detailed stitch guides and tips for perfect results
- Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
- Pattern support if needed
- An accompanying video tutorial
Difficulty level is Easy
Tension:
4 rounds of single crochet = 3.5in (8.5cm) diameter.
To measure your tension, create a sample swatch of the first 4 rounds of the pattern.
If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Creating your Perfect Easter Basket
If you want to make your Easter Basket wider, you can continue to increase the base by 6 sts each round after round 4 before moving onto the sides. All of the subsequent stitch counts will then need adjusting accordingly.
To make your Easter Basket taller, add more rounds of the sc in blo straight rounds.
Abbreviations

- Stitch counts are given in this pattern in [ ] at the end of each round. Where no stitch count is given, it is the same as the previous round.
Special Stitches
Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your easy crochet egg basket.
Magic Ring
The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.
- Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
- Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
- Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
- Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.
Watch a video tutorial of the Magic Ring here.
Foundation Half Double Crochet (Fhdc)
A foundation hdc allows you to create that first row of your project without using a chain. We use it here for the basket handle.
- Start with a slipknot and ch2 (this does not count as a stitch).
- Yarn over and insert hook in second ch from hook and pull through a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through one loop (this makes the chain part of your first Foundation hdc).
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook (this makes the hdc part of your first Foundation hdc).
- Yarn over and insert your hook into the chain part of the previous stitch, going through the two top ‘v’ shape strands of the chain.
- Yarn over and pull through one loop (this makes the chain part of the Foundation hdc).
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook (this makes the hdc part of the Foundation hdc).
- Repeat steps 5 to 7.
The foundation half double crochet is very similar to the foundation single crochet shown in this video.
Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)
A single crochet 2 together is also known as a decrease and it is used to decrease the number of stitches on a row. By using an sc2tog you will go from 2 sts down to 1 st and we use this in this pattern to create the top of the basket, working in the blo.
- Insert hook into the next st.
- Yarn over and pull through.
- Insert your hook into the next st.
- Yarn over and pull through (you will now have 3 loops on your hook rather than the normal 2 for a single crochet).
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
Watch a video tutorial on how to do the single crochet 2 together for more guidance.
Crab stitch (or reverse sc)
The crab stitch, also known as reverse single crochet, is a simple yet effective edging stitch that creates a beautifully textured, rope-like finish.
- Insert hook into the previous st.
- Yarn over.
- and pull through, making sure to pull the loop up fully.
- Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on your hook.
- Continue repeating steps 1-4 working backwards around your work.
Here is a video of the crab stitch being made.
