Easy Crochet Basket Pattern

Organise in style with the Berry Baskets – an easy crochet basket pattern featuring the beautiful even berry stitch for a texture that looks just like little berries!

Whether you’re coming to the beginning of the new school year or just need to have a sort out, these nesting baskets are the perfect thing for getting organised. If you’re anything like me, with 3 kids the house is chock full of bits and bobs that need a home.

This pattern includes clear, step-by-step instructions to help you create a set of beautiful crochet nesting baskets. There’s also a video tutorial to help you with any tricky bits!

These baskets are inspired by wild blackberries that you get in the UK towards the end of the summer. We always have a lot of fun picking blackberries to make into blackberry and apple crumble and jams.

How do you make a crochet basket?

The base of the basket is made in a spiral before we straighten up to make the sides.

The sides feature this lovely textured stitch which is a 2 row repeat. Once you’ve got the hang of the berry stitch, it’s a really easy crochet pattern to follow.

Yarn

Any Aran or worsted weight acrylic yarn. I used Aldi’s So Crafty Aran yarn, 75% Acrylic, 25% Wool (100g/3.5oz, 195m/213yds).

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your berry baskets, but I honestly would recommend using a category 4 medium weight yarn from your stash. This is a great way to use up leftover skeins of anything that you think would work!

I used 130g or 280yds of yarn for all three baskets.

Here are a few alternative options:

Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 184m/201yds)

Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed Aran, 100% Wool, (50g/1.76oz, 88m/96yds)

Brava Worsted, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 200m/218yds)

Supplies you will need

4.5mm Crochet Hook for DK or hook that is 1mm larger than the recommended hook for your chosen yarn

tapestry needle for working in ends

Scissors

Stitch Markers

Sizing

All of the baskets are 3in (7.5cm) tall.

Small basket: 4.75in (12cm) diameter.

Medium basket: 5.5in (14cm) diameter.

Large basket: 6.25in (16cm) diameter.

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet nesting baskets pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes mosaic crochet charts, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.

PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.

Included in the ad-free premium pattern:

  • A 12 page downloadable and printable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions in US and UK crochet terms
  • Detailed stitch tutorials and tips for perfect results
  • Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
  • Pattern support if needed
  • An accompanying video tutorial

Difficulty level is Intermediate.

Tension:

9 rounds of single crochet of the base = 4in (10cm)

To work a gauge swatch follow the large basket pattern up to Round 9. Measure the diameter across the centre of the circle and then count the number of complete rounds.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Pattern Notes

Be sure to read through these notes before you start your crochet bathroom set – they will make it so much easier to understand the pattern!

  • Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the special stitches as needed.
  • We will be joining our rounds of Berry stitch by slip stitching into the first stitch of the round, before turning to start the next round. It is advisable to use stitch markers, as this can get slightly confusing and, if you work your Berries in the wrong place, the pattern will no longer be straight and even.
  • The Berry stitch has a ch1 to secure the stitch. This does not count as a st. It will look like one however, so you will need to be careful to skip it when you are working the following round.
  • St counts are written in [ ] at the end of each row. Where the st count is the same as the row above, no st count is given.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your easy crochet basket pattern .

Even Berry Stitch

The Even Berry stitch is a wonderfully textured stitch, created by these lovely bumps which are placed evenly across the fabric. This stitch is a 2 row repeat, where the Berries are interspersed with slip stitches and single crochet. This tutorial shows you how to make the Berry, the rest of the stitch pattern is included in the actual basket pattern. The video tutorial shows the entire stitch pattern too.

  1. Yarn over.
  2. Insert your hook into the stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  4. Yarn over again.
  5. Insert your hook back into the same stitch.
  6. Yarn over and pull through another loop (5 loops on your hook).
  7. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
  8. Chain 1 to secure the stitch.

You can see this process in full detail in this even berry stitch video tutorial.

Invisible join

An invisible join is a ‘fake’ stitch that replaces the slip stitch join and creates a smooth finish. If you prefer though, use a slip stitch.

Cut your yarn leaving a 4” / 10cm tail and pull the tail all the way through the last stitch. Thread this end onto a needle. Insert your needle under both of the top loops of the first stitch of the round, as you would with your hook for a normal sc. Pull tight, but not too tight. Then insert your needle into the top of the last stitch you crocheted, straight down through the middle. Pull tight, but try to make the ‘fake’ stitch you’ve created the same size as the other stitches. Weave in the end to secure.

You can check out the process in this invisible join video too!

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

You can watch how it’s done in this magic ring video tutorial.
