What are Crochet Post Stitches?
There are two different ways to make a post stitch: the front post and the back post. This tutorial is all about the front post, and we will be specifically focussing on the US front post double crochet (fpdc). In UK terms, this is the front post treble crochet (fptr).
The Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) is a versatile stitch that adds depth and texture to crochet projects. Instead of working into the top loops like a standard double crochet, the fpdc is worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row, creating a raised effect. This technique is commonly used in ribbing, cables, and intricate textured patterns.
How to Crochet the Front Post Double Crochet
Before we dive into a step by step photo tutorial, let’s have a quick look at the steps used to make a front post double crochet stitch.
- Yarn over.
- Going from front to back to front again, insert your hook around the post of the stitch below.
- Yarn over.
- Pull the loop back around the post.
- Yarn over and pull through two.
- Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook to complete.

How to Do the Front Post Double Crochet? – Photo Tutorial
Before you start, you’ll need a foundation row to make your stitches into. Start with a chain of any multiple of 10 + 2. Make a double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook and each chain across. You’ll end up with a multiple of 10 double crochet stitches.
I would then recommend starting the next row with a chain 2. This counts as the first stitch.
This is how you make a front post double crochet:
- Wrap the yarn over your hook.
- Going from front to back to front again, insert your hook around the post of the stitch below. Note that you are working around the post of the stitch, not into the top of the stitch as you normally would!
- Wrap your yarn over your hook.
- Pull the loop back around the post. You now have 3 loops on your hook.
- Wrap your yarn around your hook.
- Pull through 2 of the loops on the hook.
- Wrap the yarn around the hook.
- Pull through the final 2 loops on the hook to complete your front post double crochet.
You can then continue working front post double crochet stitches across your row to create a beautiful ridge, or why not try combining them with back post double crochet stitches like I have to create this beautiful leaf stitch pattern.
Tips for Crocheting Post Stitches
- Keep your stitches nice and even.
- Pull up your stitches to their full height to avoid the stitches being too tight.
- Use stitch markers to help keep track of where you are using them in a stitch repeat.
