What is the Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch?
The extended half double crochet stitch is halfway between a half double crochet and a double crochet, and if you know how to make either of those you’ll be able to make this one too!
I love this stitch and find it much more textured and interesting than the double crochet. By adding an extra little step, a whole new stitch is created, which somehow has more coverage than a double crochet, but more height than a half double.
The extended half double crochet can be abbreviated to ehdc or exhdc. In UK terms, it is an extended half treble crochet stitch (ehtr / exhtr).
This extended crochet stitch is perfect for all sorts of patterns, from garments and accessories to blankets and home decor.

Here’s a quick step-by-step:
- Yarn over.
- Insert your hook into the stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through a loop. [3 loops on the hook]
- Yarn over.

- Pull through all 3 loops on the hook to complete your ehdc stitch.

How do I Crochet the Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch – Photo Tutorial
Start by creating a foundation chain of any number, then start working into the third chain from the hook.
The following process is the same whether you are working into the chain or into a previous row of stitches.
- Yarn over hook.

2. Insert your hook into the stitch.

3. Yarn over…

4. and pull through a loop. [3 loops on the hook]

5. Yarn over and pull through 1 loop. [still 3 loops on the hook]

6. Yarn over.

7. Pull through all 3 loops on the hook to complete your ehdc stitch.

And there you have it! Continue working across your row following the same stitch tutorial. Then turn and repeat, making a chain 2 or 3 at the start of the row for your turning chain. *decide whether you prefer 2 or 3 chains for this stitch – it can depend on how you crochet!
Tips for Crocheting the Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch
- Practice keeping a nice even tension.
- Be sure not to pull your chain in the middle of the stitch too tight.
- This tutorial uses US crochet terminology.
- Did you know that you can make extended versions of the single and double crochet stitches too?!
Working in the Round vs. Working in Rows
The extended half double crochet can be worked in rounds as well as rows and is worked in exactly the same way as above. When you reach the end of the round, slip stitch into the first stitch to join and then continue with a chain 2 and the next stitch.

And that’s it! The extended half double crochet stitch is a lovely textured crochet stitch, perfect for all sorts of different patterns! Go try it out! Don’t forget to check out my crochet patterns for more crochet inspiration.
