My husband and I have never really been into Valentine’s cards – don’t get me wrong, we still usually try and do something around Valentine’s Day like going out for a meal – we’ve just never done cards. But that was until I designed the Crochet Love Heart and I just had to put it on a card!

Timeless and delicate, this crochet love heart is perfect for adorning cards, hanging on the dresser, framing and putting on the wall, or using as a coaster! The options are endless!

It would also make a fabulous wedding favour, or a gift tag for a wedding present!

This crochet heart pattern is a quick and satisfying project, perfect for adding a handmade touch to your creations. Whether you’re gifting it or keeping it for yourself, this charming design is sure to bring a little extra love to your day.

More About the Crochet Love Heart

My crochet love heart is a super quick and easy project, but you’ll be surprised at how many different stitches it uses. This is a great pattern to learn some new stitches, whilst not taking too much time!

It features bobble stitches, picots, long stitches, short stitches and everything in between.

Scroll down to find the pattern below and make yours, I’d love to see it!

How is the Crochet Love Heart made?

I love this design: we start off with a magic circle, working in joined rounds to create a flat circle shape, almost like a wheel.

It then turns into a granny square, before we finally add on the arch shapes which turn it into a heart shape.

It’s like magic, when you see the heart appear!

Sizing

The heart is 3.5in (9cm) wide at the widest point, and 3in (7.5cm) from top to point.

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet Love Heart pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.

PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.

Included in the premium pattern:

A detailed, easy-to-follow 11 page written pattern in PDF format in US and UK crochet terms.

Step-by-step instructions to help you create your very own Love Heart.

A versatile design that can be customised with different yarns and colours.

An accompanying video tutorial.

Stitch tutorials are also included as part of the pattern.

Difficulty level is Easy

You will need:

Any Fine weight #2 (sport / light DK) cotton yarn from your stash.

3mm Crochet Hook or hook needed for your yarn

A tapestry needle for working in ends

Scissors

Stitch Markers

Tension:

Tension is not critical for this project. As it is relatively small, in this case the best thing to do would be to make a Love Heart as a swatch.

If your swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your easy crochet Love Heart, but I honestly would recommend using a category 2 fine weight cotton yarn from your stash. This is a great way to use up leftover skeins of anything that you think would work! It only uses a few grams of yarn after all.

Here are a few options:

Comfy Sport, 75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic, (50g/1.76oz, 136yds/124m).

WeCrochet Salvage, 95% Cotton (62-75% Recycled), 5% Other Fiber, (50g/1.76oz, 155yds/ 142m).

MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton, 100% Cotton, (50g/1.76oz, 180yds/165m).

Pattern Notes

  • Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the special stitches as needed.
  • ch3 counts as a dc at the start of a round. ch1 does not count as a st at the start of a round.
  • St counts are written in [ ] at the end of each row or round. Where the st count is the same as the row or round above, no st count is given.
  • In round 3, we are working into the 4 chs and the top of the bobbles from round 2. This will look like 2 sts in the top of the bobble and 3 chs on their own. This is correct. You are welcome to work into the chains or around them, but remember how many to make if working around them.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your crochet love heart.

4dc Bobble stitch

The bobble stitch is a wonderfully textured stitch, created by making multiple half stitches into 1 stitch and then securing them together to create a bobble. This tutorial shows you how to make the 4dc bobble, which is used in this pattern, but the theory is the same regardless of how many dc your bobble is made of. Watch a video of the bobble stitch here.

  1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  3. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and insert your hook back into the same stitch.
  5. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  6. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 two more times.
  8. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.

A 3dc bobble is the same as above, except for step 7, where we only repeat steps 4 to 6 once more. And in step 8 we pull through all 4 loops.

Double treble crochet (dtr)

Crocheting long stitches can be intimidating, but they are actually not too difficult and can create beautiful effects.

  1. Wrap your yarn around your hook 3 times.
  2. Insert hook into the stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops four times.

Watch a YouTube tutorial here.

Picot

A picot creates a point and is used here to create the point of the heart.

  1. chain 3.
  2. Slip stitch into the third chain from hook.

Magic Ring (MR)

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

You can then start crocheting into the ring in the normal way.

How to use your heart motif

Your crochet Love Heart can be used for a number of different things.

I used mine to make into a Valentine’s Day card. But you could also use them as coasters, make them into a piece of wall art, pop it in a frame, or add a hanger and hang them up.

The possibilities are really endless.
