More About the Cosy Crochet Winter Set

When I started designing this set, I wanted to put texture and cosiness at the forefront. I didn’t want them to be too tight, or thin, or anything that wasn’t the ultimate in cosy comfort.

I chose to use a thick category 4 weight yarn with the beautiful berry stitch to give that gorgeous texture you can see.

And I can tell you they are oh so cosy and warm!

How are the crochet hat and mittens made?

Both the hat and mittens start off as a crocheted rectangle, which we make using the even berry stitch.

The hat pattern comes in sizes 6-12m (1-3yrs, 3-6yrs, 7-10yrs, Teen/S Adult, M Adult, L Adult), whilst the mittens pattern comes in sizes 0-2yrs (3-6yrs, 7-10yrs, Teen/S Adult, M Adult, L Adult).

The hat is them seamed together to form a tube, before we gather the top.

Finally a cuff is added.

For the mittens, our rectangle is again folded and seamed, leaving a space for a thumb hole.

To finish, we add a cuff and some edging.

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet hat and mittens patterns.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials, schematics and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing is for a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download.

Included in the premium pattern:

A 14 page pdf crochet pattern written in US and UK crochet terms, including images, step by step instructions and guidance.

An accompanying video tutorial.

Stitch tutorials are also included as part of the pattern.

Pattern support if needed.

Difficulty level is Easy

You will need:

Any Aran or worsted weight acrylic yarn. I used Aldi’s So Crafty Aran yarn, 75% Acrylic, 25% Wool (100g/3.5oz, 195m/213yds) and also Caron Simply Soft, 100% Acrylic (170g/6oz, 288m/315yds) for different versions of the pattern.

Tension:

13 sts and 16 row = 4in x 4in (10cm x 10cm) over Even Berry Stitch 2 row repeat. All of the instructions to make a gauge swatch are included in the pattern.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your cosy berry hat and mittens, but I honestly would recommend using a category 4 medium weight yarn from your stash. This is a great way to use up leftover skeins of anything that you think would work!

I used 2 balls of yarn for the hat and mittens.

Here are a few alternative options:

Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 184m/201yds)

Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed Aran, 100% Wool, (50g/1.76oz, 88m/96yds)

Brava Worsted, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 200m/218yds)

Pattern Notes

Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.

It is advisable to go through the pattern and mark the size and stitch numbers you are going to be using, to make it easier.

We will be working into the turning chains at the end of each row of the main hat and mittens pattern. By skipping the first st of the pattern and working into the turning chain at the end of the row, we keep the same st count throughout.

The Berry stitch has a ch1 to secure the stitch. This does not count as a st. It will look like one however, so you will need to be careful to skip it when you are working the following row.

You should consider blocking your hat and mittens whilst they are still flat rectangles. You can do this even if you do not fasten off your yarn.

Hat sizes are written as 6-12m (1-3yrs, 3-6yrs, 7-10yrs, Teen/S Adult, M Adult, L Adult).

Mittens sizes are written as 0-2yrs (3-6yrs, 7-10yrs, Teen/S Adult, M Adult, L Adult).

St counts are written in [ ] at the end of each row. Where the st count is the same as the row above, no st count is given.

The cuff is worked at right angles to the main hat and mittens body, so you will need to turn your work 90 degrees to work the cuff.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your crochet hat and gloves.

Even Berry Stitch

The Even Berry stitch is a wonderfully textured stitch, created by these lovely bumps which are placed evenly across the fabric. This stitch is a 2 row repeat, where the Berries are interspersed with slip stitches and single crochet. This tutorial shows you how to make the Berry, the rest of the stitch pattern is included in the actual hat and mittens pattern. The video tutorial shows the entire stitch pattern too.

  1. Yarn over.
  2. Insert your hook into the stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  4. Yarn over again.
  5. Insert your hook back into the same stitch.
  6. Yarn over and pull through another loop (5 loops on your hook).
  7. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
  8. Chain 1 to secure the stitch.

slip stitch join

f you’re not a fan of sewing seams, the slip stitch join is for you. In this version we’ll be working through 1 loop of each piece. With the seam held together:

  1. Insert your hook into the front loop of the st on the motif nearest you and the back loop of the corresponding st on the motif furthest from you.
  2. Yarn over.
  3. Pull through both loops and the loop on your hook.
  4. Continue across your seam.
