A crocheted grey mouse being held in a hand

Are you looking for a quick and charming crochet project?  The teeny Munchkin Mouse crochet pattern is here!

This little critter is perfect for adding a touch of whimsy to your desk, bookshelf, or it can even be used as a keychain charm. My daughter loves her mouse. She takes it to bed with her, despite its small size.

And actually, it was her who asked me to make a mouse in the first place. So this pattern really should be dedicated to her.

There is something super cute about mouse characters. Real mice scare the bejesus out of me, but model mice are oh so cute! I’m sure you’re going to love making one for yourself as much as I love mine!

The pattern is suitable for crocheters of all skill levels, with clear instructions to guide you through the creation process. It also makes a great introduction to amigurumi.

How is the Munchkin Mouse crochet pattern made?

As I mentioned above, the Munchkin Mouse Crochet Pattern makes a great introduction to amigurumi. It is an easy pattern with simple increases and decreases and only using one stitch.

But what is amigurumi?

Have you ever seen those adorable crocheted or knitted stuffed toys? Those delightful creations are called amigurumi! This Japanese term translates to “crocheted or knitted stuffed doll,” perfectly capturing the essence of this charming craft.

Amigurumi uses standard crocheting techniques such as double crochet and standard increases and decreases.

With amigurumi, you will be working in the round in a continuous spiral. You will be amazed at all the different shapes you can create with simple stitches and increases and decreases.

Size

My finished mouse measured 3.5″ (8cm) from nose to the start of the tail x 1.5″ (4cm) across. The tail adds an extra 3” (8cm).

As you can see, this is a super cute, teeny pocket-sized mouse.

If you want to change the size of your mouse, you can experiment using a thicker yarn and a larger hook.

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your Munchkin Mouse crochet pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials, schematics, as well as full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing is for a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download.

Included in the Munchkin Mouse premium pattern:

A 7 page pdf crochet pattern written in US and UK crochet terms, including images, step by step instructions and guidance.

An accompanying video tutorial.

Stitch tutorials are also included as part of the pattern.

Pattern support if needed.

Difficulty level is Beginner.

You will need:

Yarn and Colors Must-Have, 100% Cotton (50g/1.8oz, 125m/137yds) – any 4-ply / fingering weight yarn will work well

2.5mm Crochet Hook

A tapestry needle for working in ends

Stitch Markers

Scissors

Toy Stuffing

Embroidery thread for eyes (optional)

Tension:

6 stitches and 6 rows over single crochet = 1” / 2.5cm square.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

However tension is not really critical for this project. You just need to ensure your stitches are tight enough that the stuffing doesn’t poke through.

Pattern Notes

The mouse is constructed starting from the nose and working down to the tail. The ears are made separately and sewn on to finish.

If you wish, you can embroider on eyes, nose and even whiskers.

The pattern uses the amigurumi technique. Work in continuous spirals, except for Row 3 of the ears and the tail.

As you are working in continuous spirals, you may find it useful to mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker.

Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorial as needed.

Special Stitches

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

You can then start crocheting into the ring in the normal way.

Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)

There are 2 ways to make decreases – watch the standard way here.

In amigurumi, however, you can also use an invisible decrease, which looks much better when working in the round:

  1. Insert hook into the front loop of the first st.
  2. Then straight away insert hook into the front loop of the next st.
  3. Yarn over and pull through both loops (you will have 2 loops on your hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on your hook.
