My daughter had a bit of a panic the other week at her ballet class. She had lost her pink scrunchie that we use to tie her hair in a bun! Luckily for her, my free crochet scrunchie pattern was just the thing!
Designed to be super simple, and easily adaptable to any yarn, this is a great quick crochet project that anyone can whip up in less than half an hour.

More about the Crochet Scrunchie
This design came out of necessity. An upset daughter is not something to be trifled with and a black scrunchie was just not good enough for her ballet class.
So I rifled through my yarn stash and found a small amount of chunky chenille yarn. I honestly don’t know where it came from, as I really am not a fan of chenille yarn on the whole, but actually it was just the thing for this project.
How are the Crochet Hair Ties Made?
These crochet hair ties (scrunchies) are simple to make. You’ll need a hair elastic to work around and some yarn.
And then all you need to know is how to do chains and US double crochet stitches. As you can tell, it’s a really easy pattern, but very effective!
As it’s so quick, I think it would make a great project for selling at craft fairs. I’m happy for small numbers of items made from my patterns to be sold, but please do credit @concretegemscrochet for any patterns you do use.

Size
The size of your scrunchie is totally up to you.
Base your choice on the recipient. For children, you’ll want to use a hair elastic that’s not to big as your starting point. For adults, you can use slightly bigger hair elastics.
How wide your scrunchie ends up then depends on the weight of yarn you use. A thicker yarn, such as the super chunky #6 weight chenille yarn that I used will make a wider scrunchie than a DK #3 weight yarn.
If you choose to use a thinner yarn because that is all you have in your stash, I’d recommend holding the yarn double or even treble to get a good thickness to your scrunchie.
How to get the pattern
This pattern is exclusively only available on this blog post.
Carry on scrolling down and read the pattern free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.
Difficulty level is Beginner
You will need:
Any yarn you like. I’d recommend a category #5 or #6 yarn, but if you don’t have that then feel free to use any yarn and simply hold more than one strand together.
I used a super chunky Chenille yarn with an 8.0mm hook.
Crochet hook to match the yarn. If you’re holding more than one strand together, you’ll also need to use a bigger hook size than the one recommended for that yarn.

Pattern Notes
Read through the free crochet scrunchie pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
The more stitches you squeeze onto your hair elastic, the fuller and more ruffly your scrunchie will become.
Special Stitches
Below are the instructions for the special stitches you will need for your crochet hair scrunchies.
Stacked dc
The stacked dc is a lovely alternative to a turning chain. It creates a cleaner, straighter edge for your crochet projects without gaps or uneven edges.
- Insert your hook straight into the very first st of the row/round without chaining first.
- Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a single crochet).
- Insert your hook now into the vertical bar of the single crochet st that is furthest from your hook side.
- Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a stacked double crochet).
You can watch a video tutorial of the stacked double crochet here.
