More about the Cardigan

I’ve wanted to design a lace cover up for so long, but I’ve shied away from all the different aspects required to bring it all together. But finally I’ve bitten the bullet and I’m so pleased with the finished design.

I wanted to make something using motifs, which caused me problems with working out the sizing. This is why this pattern comes in 3 sizes, but these 3 sizes span XS to 5XL. Because the pattern is open-fronted, I was able to use the cross-back measurements to work out 3 sizes which would fit everyone.

I didn’t want a normal cardigan that meets in the front, rather an open garment that hangs down each side and fits the back. The cardigan has positive ease which means it is

How is this Crochet Summer Cardigan Pattern Made?

The Blossom Breeze Cardi is constructed out of a number of motifs, which are made individually.

The motif starts as a circle working in the round, before it is changed to a square in Round 7. The motifs are then blocked to size.

The motifs are joined together in strips. Four of the strips are joined to form the back panel.

Edging is added to the remaining two strips, which form the front panels.

The front panels are seamed to the back panel, and then the side seams are made.

Finally, armhole, bottom and neckline edgings are added.

Styling the Blossom Breeze Crochet Cardigan

The brilliant thing about this summer crochet cardigan is that it can be worn with anything.

Wear it over a vest and shorts to elevate a simple outfit!

Pair it with floaty trousers for a boho vibe.

Wear it with a dress for a summer’s evening out.

Or use it as a beach cover up over a bikini or swimsuit!

The choice is yours – however you style your lace cardigan, it’s going to bring style and interest to your outfit!

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet summer cardigan pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials, schematics and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing is for a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download.

Included in the premium pattern:

An 18 page pdf crochet pattern written in US and UK crochet terms, including images, step by step instructions and guidance.

An accompanying video tutorial.

Stitch tutorials are also included as part of the pattern.

Tension:

1 motif = 5.5 (6, 6.25) in (14 (15, 16) cm) for each of the three sizes.

To measure your tension / gauge, create a sample swatch by making one motif in the size you wish to make.

Block and measure your swatch.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your crochet summer cardigan pattern.

Any 4 ply / Sport weight #2 yarn will work great here. As you’re making a summer garment, I’d recommend using a cotton or cotton blend yarn. But try a gauge swatch with what you fancy and see how you get on. Here are a few alternative options:

Yarn and Colors Must-Have, 100% cotton (50g/1.76oz, 125m/137yds)

Scheepjes Whirlette, 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 455m/498yds)

Pattern Notes

Depending on which size you choose to make, you will be making motifs of either 5.5, 6 or 6.25 inches (14, 15 or 16 cm).

There are three different lengths (L1, (L2, L3)) that you can choose from for your cardi depending on which size you choose to make – see below in options.

The Cardi is open-fronted. It will not cover across the front, but has been designed to fit standard cross-back measurements.

ch1 does not count as a stitch throughout.

ch4 counts as a treble crochet throughout, except in Round 8 of the L/XL/2XL and 3XL/4XL/5XL sizes where it counts as a dc and a ch 1.

A ch4 followed by 3 trebles counts as 4 trebles. A ch4 followed by a tr3tog counts as a tr4tog.

Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.

Stitch counts are included in square brackets. If there are no stitch counts given, the stitch count is the same as the previous row or round.

The pattern uses one colour throughout. If you would like to make yours in multiple colours, you will need to adjust your yarn amounts accordingly.

If you are working the L/XL/2XL size, the last round of the motifs in alternate dc and ch1. The corner consists of dc, ch1 (three times) and it is the middle dc that then becomes the corner going forward. On the front panel edging, you work your stitches into both the dcs and the ch1-sps.

Optional Adjustments

You can adjust the length of your cardigan by adding more or fewer motifs down the length. There are 3 lengths to choose from, and you can see below how many motifs you need to make for each size:

chart showing lengths of the blossom breeze cardi

If you would like to make a different length to this, you will need to add or reduce the number of motifs you make. You need 6 motifs across the width of the cardi, so you could make as few as 18 motifs for a cropped cardi, or even up to 54 for a really long one.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your crochet summer cardigan pattern.

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.

1.Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger. 2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook. 3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would. 4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

You can then start crocheting into the ring in the normal way.

Treble Crochet Stitch

The treble crochet stitch is a tall stitch used in this pattern to create the flower pattern in the motifs:

  • Wrap your yarn around your hook twice.
  • Insert your hook into the stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through (4 loops on your hook).
  • (Yarn over and pull through 2 loops) three times.

tr3tog & tr4tog

These treble decrease stitches are useful for so much more than a functional decrease. They are perfect for creating beautiful flower and lace motifs too, like the Blossom Breeze Cardi!

  • Wrap your yarn around your hook twice. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through a loop.
  • (Yarn over and pull through 2 loops) twice.
  • Repeat steps 2-3 two more times for a tr3tog and three more times for a tr4tog.
  • Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook.

Slip Stitch Join

If you’re not a fan of sewing seams, the slip stitch join is for you. In this version we’ll be working through 1 loop of each motif. With 2 motifs held together with their RS facing each other:

  • Insert your hook into the front loop of the st on the motif nearest you and the back loop of the corresponding st on the motif furthest from you.
  • Yarn over.
  • Pull through both loops and the loop on your hook.
  • Continue across your seam.

Yarn Over Slip Stitch

The yarn over slip stitch is a great way to create a knit-look ribbing. The addition of the yarn over means that it works up a lot quicker than regular slip stitch and it looks great too! You may find it easier to twist your hook to the back to pull through the loops in this stitch.

  • Wrap your yarn around your hook.
  • Insert your hook into the back loop only of the stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through the stitch and through all the loops on your hook.
  • Continue repeating steps 1-3 across your row.

ASSEMBLY

Block all motifs to size.

Motifs are joined together in strips of 5 (6, 7) depending on which length you are making. Make sure to join the motifs so they are all the same way up.

To Join:

Using a slip stitch join (see special stitches) or whichever joining technique you prefer, join your motifs into 6 long strips.

For XS/S/M, leave the 2 ch unjoined.

For L/XL/2XL, leave (ch1, dc, ch1) unjoined.

For 3XL/4XL/5XL, leave (sc, ch1, sc) unjoined.

BACK PANEL

Join 4 of your strips together to form a rectangle for the back panel as shown in the schematic on page 3. When you reach the join between motifs, slip stitch around one side only through only one layer, so the gap stays open.

At this point, you may want to sew in all the ends and block the back panel again to size.
