More about the Crochet Garland

Christmas garlands of old were tacky and loud, made with that plasticky foil material! Nowadays they’re much more subtle and often take their inspiration from nature.

I wanted to design a garland that was both fun and modern, but with a touch of sparkle. And so the Twinkling Trees and Snowflakes Garland was born.

It’s a super easy pattern, and one that you can whip up whilst watching your favourite Christmas movie!

I also made sure that you can customise it to suit you! Choose a yarn that matches your home; make your garland any length you like; add any number of snowflakes and trees; or just make the individual motifs and use them as gift tags!

How are the Crochet Snowflakes and Trees Made?

This free crochet garland pattern is super easy to follow and there is a full-length video tutorial to use if you are a visual learner – it’s split into 2 videos so you can make the snowflakes and trees separately!

We start by making the number of snowflakes and trees you want. There is the option (recommended) to double up your trees to make them straighter and more rigid, so if you’re doing that, you’ll need to make twice as many trees.

The motifs are then fastened off and blocked.

We then make the garland using a foundation cord, before adding the motifs and wooden beads.

Styling Your Christmas Garland

There are so many different styling options when it comes to your Christmas garland.

Will you hang yours across the fireplace like I did? Or maybe you’ll hang it on the wall from one corner to the next?

Perhaps you’ll string it around your Christmas tree, or you could even lay it flat as a table centrepiece for Christmas dinner!

You might like to make lots of the trees and snowflakes, but maybe you don’t fancy making a garland. In that case, you could hang the individual motifs on your Christmas tree, or, and this is my favourite: use them on your Christmas presents as gift tags. They’ll elevate your gifting to totally new levels!

However you style your garland, be sure to tag me on social media so I can see your finished project! @concretegemscrochet

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet Christmas Garland pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials, schematics and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing is for a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download.

Included in the premium pattern:

A 12 page pdf crochet pattern written in US and UK crochet terms, including images, step by step instructions and guidance.

Pattern Notes

Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.

ch1 does not count as a st throughout.

You have the option to double up the trees. This makes them less likely to twist and more likely to hang straight. You can of course just leave them as a single thickness.

If you are doubling up your trees, you only need to add a trunk to one of the 2 trees.

If you are hanging your garland against a wall and the reverse won’t be seen, you only need to embroider the silver lights onto one side.

Optional Adjustments

The garland is fully customisable.

Make as many trees and snowflakes as you like.

Make your garland as long or as short as you like.

Use the trees and snowflakes as individual decorations or make them into the garland described here.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your crochet garland pattern.

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

You can then start crocheting into the ring in the normal way.

Click here to watch a tutorial of the magic ring.

Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)

A single crochet 2 together is also known as a decrease and it is used to decrease the number of stitches on a row. By using an sc2tog you will go from 2 sts down to 1 st and we use this in this pattern to create the tree shape.

  1. Insert hook into the next st.
  2. Yarn over and pull through.
  3. Insert your hook into the next st.
  4. Yarn over and pull through (you will now have 3 loops on your hook rather than the normal 2 for a single crochet).
  5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Watch a video tutorial of the single crochet 2 together.

Foundation Cord

The foundation cord is a super easy and fun way to create a round, strong cord. We are going to use it here to create the garland.

If you want to make your cord in a single colour: you will need to start your cord leaving a long tail end, as you will be working with both the tail end and the ball end of the yarn. As a general rule, leave 3 times the length of the cord you want to make.

At this point on your yarn, make a slipknot on your hook.

  1. Wrap the tail end of the yarn over your hook away from you.
  2. Then wrap the ball end over your hook, bringing it towards you.
  3. Pull that loop through both the tail end and the loop on your hook.
  4. Repeat.

If you want to make your cord using 2 colours as I did: hold both colours together and make a slipknot on your hook. Follow the instructions above using one colour yarn as if it were the tail end and the other colour as if it were the ball end.

TREE TRUNK

Row 1: join yarn C in the first of the middle 2 sts at the bottom of the tree, ch1, 2sc, turn. [2]

Row 2: ch1, 2sc.

Fasten off.

MAKING UP

Optional: using yarn A, embroider single stitches randomly over some of your trees to create the effect of fairy lights.

If you are doubling up your trees, we join them together now. Holding 2 trees with WS together, use a whip stitch to join them together all the way around.

Remember to leave a tail end at the top of the tree for hanging. Weave in all other ends and lightly block.

GARLAND

Using yarns A and C, create a foundation cord for your desired length of garland.

Thread the same number of wooden beads as you have snowflakes onto your garland, and spread them evenly along your garland. Thread a bead onto the tail end of each tree, which you are using to hang your tree with.

Tie your trees and snowflakes onto your garland at regular intervals. Secure the ends by weaving them back into the tree/snowflake. Move the beads so they are above the snowflakes. Because of the thickness of the garland, they should stay in place on their own.

Weave in all remaining ends and hang up your garland.
