Wrap yourself in timeless style with this simple crochet triangle shawl pattern – a light and airy accessory that’s as fun to make as it is to wear.
I wanted this shawl to be a relaxing combination of the classic granny stitch and a simple mesh stitch, making it the perfect project for beginners and seasoned crocheters alike. Easy repetition makes this a great mindful crochet project to work on in front of the TV.
Its open, lacy texture makes it ideal for layering in any season – from breezy spring mornings to cool autumn evenings. Whether you choose a bold variegated yarn or a softer, neutral palette, the Granny Mesh Shawl is sure to become a staple in your handmade wardrobe.
This pattern includes clear, step-by-step instructions to help you create a beautiful modern granny shawl. There’s also a video tutorial to help you with any tricky bits!

Making easy crochet patterns with lots of texture is one of my favourite things to do, and I think you’ll agree that this one definitely fits the bill! It works up super quickly too!
How do you make a crochet triangle shawl?
There are a few different ways to make triangle shawls, but for this one we keep it simple!
We start in the centre with a magic ring, before working in turned rows. Each row increases to create a triangle shape, which we work in a four row repeating pattern.
We continue this for as long as we want 🙂

Yarn
King Cole Riot DK, 70% Acrylic 30% Wool (100g/3.53oz, 294m/322yds) in Party (3762) – I used 3 skeins for my simple crochet shawl.
Any DK yarn would work really well for this project.
Yarn Alternatives
There are so many options for yarn for your Granny Mesh Shawl. As I mentioned, any DK yarn would work wonderfully.
Consider using a colour-changing yarn as I have, or you could choose to make a striped shawl by changing the yarn colour every few rows. You could use yarn from your stash for this option.
You’ll need around 735m/805yds to make the same size as me.
Here are a few alternative options that you might like to consider:
Stylecraft Knit Me Crochet Me, 80% Acrylic 20% Wool (100g/3.53oz, 290m/317yds)
Hayfield Bonus DK, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 280m/306yds)
Brava Recycle, 100% Recycled Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 280m/306yds)
Swish DK, 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool (50g/1.76oz, 112m/123yds)
Supplies you will need
4.5mm Crochet Hook for DK or hook needed to meet the gauge
A tapestry needle for working in ends
Sizing
My easy crochet triangle shawl measures 33 inches tall x 50 inches wide (84cm x 127cm), but you can make yours any size you like.
How to get the pattern
There are a few different ways that you can get your granny triangle shawl crochet pattern.
You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.
Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes mosaic crochet charts, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.
PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.
Included in the ad-free premium pattern:
- A 9 page downloadable and printable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions in US and UK crochet terms
- Detailed stitch guides and tips for perfect results
- Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
- Pattern support if needed
- An accompanying video tutorial
Difficulty level is Easy.
Tension:
6 groups of 3dc and 8 rows of the set pattern = 4in x 4in (10cm x 10cm), however tension is not critical as long as you are happy with the drape.
To measure your tension, create a sample swatch, using the yarn, hook and stitches you will use in the pattern. Make your swatch larger than 4 inch (10cm) square, so that you do not need to measure the edge stitches, which are usually a slightly different tension.
If your swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Customising to Make your Triangle Shawl Perfect for You
You can make your shawl any size by continuing to repeat Rows 3 to 6 as many or as few times as you desire.
Also consider your yarn choice. Try changing colour every 4 rows, or how about a 2 or 3 colour block shawl. Colour-changing yarns also make a great look, or how about using a luxury hand-dyed yarn for this project.
Using a different weight yarn is an easy way to customise your shawl, but be sure to try a gauge swatch to see if it drapes well.

Pattern Notes
Be sure to read through these notes before you start your simple crochet triangle shawl pattern – they will make it so much easier to understand the pattern!
- Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
- Stitch counts are given in this pattern in [ ] at the end of each row or round. Where no stitch count is given, it is the same as the previous row or round. Chains do not count as a st in the st count.
- Beginning ch1 does not count as a stitch.
- A stacked dc counts as a dc.
- A 3dc cluster is 3 double crochet stitches in one space or stitch.
- Odd numbered rows are on the RS and even numbered rows are on the WS. However, it will look reversible for wearing it and so it doesn’t matter much.
- If you wish to keep track of the number of stitches per row, the best way to do this is to count every 4th row from row 2 onwards, e.g. rows 2, 6, 10, 14, 18 etc. The number of 3dc clusters will increase by 12 every 4th row. So Row 2 has 4 3dc clusters, Row 6 has 16, Row 10 has 28, Row 14 has 40, and so on.
Special Stitches
Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your modern granny shawl.
Stacked double crochet
The stacked dc is a lovely alternative to a turning chain. It creates a cleaner, straighter edge for your crochet projects without gaps or uneven edges.
- Insert your hook straight into the very first st of the row/round without chaining first.
- Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a single crochet).
- Insert your hook now into the vertical bar of the single crochet st that is furthest from your hook side.
- Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a stacked double crochet).
You can see this process in full detail in this stacked dc video tutorial.
Magic ring
The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.
- Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
- Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
- Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
- Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.
