What Are Tassels and What Can You Use Them For?

A tassel is literally a bunch of yarn strands tied together to form a decorative hanging feature.

You can use them in so many different projects, such as blankets and scarves. You could use them in sweaters, on the ties or bottoms. They look great on ponchos, and of course you can also use them for bookmarks, keychains, home decor, and gifts.

What is the Best Yarn for Tassels

You can use any type of yarn to make your tassels and you will get different effects. It is common to use the same yarn as the rest of the crochet or knit project, so that the tassels are homogenous with the rest of the piece.

  • Soft acrylic will give you nice fluffy tassels
  • Cotton tassels will be more sleek and firm
  • Use bulky yarn for dramatic, chunky tassels
  • Or try multicoloured yarn for funky blended tassels like I have.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Wrap the Yarn: wrap the yarn around your piece of card until you reach the desired thickness. I recommend a minimum of 10 times round, but 20 is much better for a thicker tassel.

2. Tie the Top: insert a piece of yarn (around 8 inches (20 cm)) behind the yarn and slide it right to the top of your card. Tie in a double knot to secure.

3. Cut the Bottom: Slide your scissors through the yarn at the bottom and cut through all layers, as close to the bottom of the card as possible.

4. Wrap the Neck: Lay another piece of 12 inch (30 cm) yarn down and place the tassel on top of it 0.5 inches (1 cm) down from the top of the tassel. Wrap it around a number of times until you’re happy with the look. Tie to secure with a knot. Then thread the ends down inside the tassel with a needle. Trim the bottom as needed.

9. You have now created your first tassel. Make as many as you need and then tie them to your project. Weave in the loose ends and enjoy!

Tassel Customisation Ideas

Don’t stop there! Let your mind go wild with some of these ideas to jazz up your tassels.

  • Add beads or charms
  • Use gradient yarn for an ombré effect
  • Combine different yarn types for texture
  • Make super long tassels or trim them short
  • Use metallic thread for shimmer.

Common Tassel Mistakes to Avoid

Making tassels is fairly straightforward, but there are a few common mistakes you might want to bear in mind:

  • Tying the top too loosely can lead to the tassel falling apart, so be sure to make those knots nice and tight.
  • For a polished finish, make sure you trim the ends nice and evenly. A lopsided tassel will look very amateurish!
  • Using blunt scissors will mean frayed edges, so make sure yours are nice and sharp.

I think that’s it, let’s go make some tassels!
