The crochet bag is made from four textured granny squares featuring the same flower motif as the Granny Plant Pot Cover, bringing a bold, nature-inspired look to your outfit. The compact shape is based on a classic bum bag, but designed to be worn crossbody for hands-free comfort and style.
How do you make a crochet crossbody bag?
This granny square purse pattern is made out of just 4 granny squares, which are seamed together to create a trapezoid shape.
After that it’s just a case of adding some top edging, making a lining, and adding a zip and strap!

Yarn
Any cotton or cotton blend yarn you would like.
I used DillyDally by WeCrochet, 70% Pima Cotton 20% Bamboo, 10% Hemp (50g/176oz, 100m/109yds) in Serrano (A), Cornflower (B) and Bracken (C).
A DK yarn worked to the same tension will make a bag the same size.
Using a different weight yarn will still work, but will make your bag a different size.
Yarn Alternatives
This pattern is designed to be used with a DK weight cotton blend. However, you can use another yarn weight if you are happy for the bag to be a different size.
Here are a few alternative options you might like:
Animation DK by WeCrochet, 100% Mercerized Cotton, (50g/1.76oz, 127m/139yds)
Sirdar Stories DK, 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic, (50g/1.76oz, 140m/153yds)
Sirdar Happy Cotton, 100% Cotton, (20g/0.71oz, 43m/47yds)
Lion Brand Coboo, 50% Cotton, 50% Rayon from bamboo, (100g/3.5oz, 212m/232yds)
Supplies you will need
5.0mm Crochet Hook for DK or hook that is 1mm larger than the recommended hook for your chosen yarn
A tapestry needle for working in ends
8 – 12 inch (20 – 30cm) Zip
Fabric and matching thread for lining
0.5 x 47 inch (12mm x 120cm) or similar size handbag shoulder strap
Sizing
The finished crochet purse measures 13.5 inches wide x 4.5 inches tall (34.5cm x 11.5cm).
How to get the pattern
There are a few different ways that you can get your granny square bag crochet pattern.
You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.
Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes mosaic crochet charts, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.
PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.
Included in the ad-free premium pattern:
- A 12 page downloadable and printable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions in US and UK crochet terms
- Detailed stitch guides and tips for perfect results
- Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
- Pattern support if needed
- An accompanying video tutorial
Difficulty level is Easy.
Tension:
3 rounds of the granny square = 4.5 inches (11.5cm) square.
To measure your tension, create a swatch using the yarn and hook you are planning to use for the project. Make the swatch following the instructions in the pattern.
If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Pattern Notes
Be sure to read through these notes before you start your crochet crossbody bag pattern – they will make it so much easier to understand the pattern!
- Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
- Stitch counts are given in this pattern in [ ] at the end of each row or round. Where no stitch count is given, it is the same as the previous row or round.
- The granny squares are made with the RS always facing you.
- Beginning ch1 does not count as a stitch.
- A stacked dc counts as a dc.
- A stracked tr and 2tr-cl counts as a 3tr-cl.
Special Stitches
Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your sling bag crochet pattern.
3 treble-cluster (3tr-cl)
The 3tr-cl stitch is used to create the petal shape. The 2tr-cl is made in the same way with 1 less treble.
- Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (1 petal part-created).
- Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the same stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 petals part-created).
- Repeat steps 5 to 8 again (3 petals part-created).
- Yarn over.
- Pull through all 4 loops on your hook to complete the 3tr-cl.
You can see this process in full detail in this 3 treble cluster video tutorial.
Stacked double crochet
The stacked dc is a lovely alternative to a turning chain. It creates a cleaner, straighter edge for your crochet projects without gaps or uneven edges. To create a stacked treble, simply stack another single crochet on top.
- Insert your hook straight into the very first st of the row/round without chaining first.
- Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a single crochet).
- Insert your hook now into the vertical bar of the single crochet st that is furthest from your hook side.
- Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a stacked double crochet).

Invisible join
An invisible join is a ‘fake’ stitch that replaces the slip stitch join and creates a smooth finish. If you prefer though, use a slip stitch.
Cut your yarn leaving a 4” / 10cm tail and pull the tail all the way through the last stitch. Thread this end onto a needle. Insert your needle under both of the top loops of the first stitch of the round, as you would with your hook for a normal sc. Pull tight, but not too tight. Then insert your needle into the top of the last stitch you crocheted, straight down through the middle. Pull tight, but try to make the ‘fake’ stitch you’ve created the same size as the other stitches. Weave in the end to secure.
You can check out the process in this invisible join video too!
Magic Ring
The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.
- Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
- Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
- Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
- Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.
You can watch how it’s done in this magic ring video tutorial.
Slip stitch seam
In this tutorial we’ll be working through 1 loop of each panel, but you can work through both for a sturdier seam if you prefer. With 2 panels held together with their RS facing each other:
- Insert your hook into the front loop of the st on the panel nearest you and the back loop of the corresponding st on the panel furthest from you.
- Yarn over.
- Pull through both loops and the loop on your hook.
- Continue across your seam.

Top Edging
Round 1: With RS facing, join Yarn A in any stitch along the top of any square, sc in each st along the square, hdc in each of the 2 ch-sps and the seam between squares, continue along the top until one end of the bag, 2sc in the 2 ch-sp at end of bag, repeat across the other side of the bag, ss in first st to join.
Rounds 2 and 3: ch1, sc in blo around, ss in first st to join or use an invisible join.
Add more rounds to make your bag taller if you prefer.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Bag Lining
Lay out your bag flat on top of your lining fabric folded double. Carefully draw around your bag leaving a 0.5 inch (1cm) space all around your bag and cut it out.
With wrong sides facing up, sew the zip to the top edge of each piece of lining in the middle, leaving a 0.5 inch (1cm) seam allowance. The seam allowance should be on the outside of the lining. Make sure the zip is facing upwards.
Still with wrong sides facing out, sew the 2 layers of lining together around the other 3 sides with a 0.5 inch (1cm) seam allowance. You can do this by hand or machine. Fold the seam allowances over and tack to the lining.
Insert into your bag and carefully sew your lining into your bag by hand using small stitches along either side of the zip. See video tutorial for clarification.
If your zip is shorter than your bag, use yarn C to single crochet a row on each side of the zip as follows. If using a non-crocheted strap as I am, join the strap into 3 sc at the end of the bag as you work.
Join yarn into blo of st from Round 3 closest to the zip so that you will work towards an end. Sc in blo in each st around the end to the st opposite your starting st. To strengthen the strap sew it through onto the lining as well. Without fastening off, ss the 2 sides of sc just worked together. Fasten off.
Repeat on the other side of the zip.
Weave in all ends.
If crocheting a strap, join yarn to end 3 sts of bag, and make ch1, 3sc, turn for as many rows as you desire.
