A lady stands in a garden holding a large crochet pumpkin she has made

I had the idea of making a super large pumpkin, the likes of which you find in fairy tales, and I just couldn’t get the idea out of my head! So here is my giant pumpkin crochet pattern!

You might think a giant crochet pumpkin is a bit of a daunting project, but I’m here to show you that it’s really not! And you don’t need to go spending a small fortune on roving or super bulky yarn either. I made the entire pumpkin out of leftover yarn from my stash!

Let’s dive in and make our Cinderella pumpkin!

More about the Giant Pumpkin

I’ve always loved crochet pumpkins, and I have quite a collection now! Have you checked out my other free crochet pumpkin pattern yet?

This giant crochet pumpkin pattern is actually based on my other pumpkin pattern, but there are a few changes, so I wanted to keep it separate!

The giant pumpkin has the same beautiful texture as the regular sized pumpkins, but that texture is even more pronounced in super size! It’s a really simple stitch pattern though, so you’ll have no problem picking it up.

The trickier part to this pattern is working with a large hook and using multiple strands of yarn held together, but once you get the hang of that, you’ll be whipping up massive pumpkins in no time at all!

How is this Free Crochet Pumpkin Pattern Made?

This large crochet pumpkin pattern is super easy to follow and there is a video tutorial of the smaller pumpkins to use if you are a visual learner.

The pumpkins are made in joined rounds. A ss is used at the end of each round to join to the first st of the round.

The increase and decrease sections are crocheted without turning, but the middle section is made in turned rounds.

The textured middle section of the pumpkin is made using a stitch called crunch stitch, which is a combination of hdc and ss. This stitch is explained fully in the pattern and in the video tutorial.

Styling Your Pumpkin

I love to set up a display of autumnal decorations as soon as the summer’s over! It really cheers me up as we retreat out of the garden and back indoors for the colder months.

There is nothing better than adding to this display every year with something unique and handmade. And that’s where my crochet pumpkins come in. I can’t wait to find the perfect spot for my giant pumpkin to live!

How many you make, in what yarn or colour is really up to you! You can then choose to arrange them randomly, in a pile or a neat arrangement. Or how about a stack of pumpkins like this? Would that work with giant pumpkins too?

The options really are endless and you can let your imagination run wild with it!

Sizing

My giant pumpkin measured 13in x 7in (33cm x 18cm), but you can make yours as large as you like!

It really just depends on the yarn you use and how many strands you hold together at a time.

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your free crochet pumpkin pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials, schematics and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing is for a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download.

Included in the premium pattern:

A 9 page pdf crochet pattern written in US and UK crochet terms, including images, step by step instructions and guidance.

An accompanying video tutorial.

Stitch tutorials are also included as part of the pattern.

Pattern support if needed.

Difficulty level is Advanced Beginner.

You will need:

Yarn from your stash. I used Stylecraft Special DK, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.5oz, 295m/323yds) in different shades of orange, red, yellow and grey

I held 8 strands of DK yarn together at a time for the main pumpkin

For the stem, I used Caron Simply Soft, 100% Acrylic (170g/6oz, 288m/315yds) in Cool Green and Chocolate, holding 2 strands of each colour altogether

10.0mm Crochet Hook or hook needed for your yarn

A tapestry needle for working in ends

Scissors

Stuffing – see note below

Tension:

6 stitches and 6 rows over single crochet stitch = 4” / 10cm square.

However, tension is not important for this project. You will just end up with a slightly different sized pumpkin.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your huge crochet pumpkin, but I honestly would recommend using yarn from your stash. This is a great way to use up leftover skeins of anything that you think would work for a pumpkin colour!

And really, it doesn’t even have to be a traditional coloured pumpkin either!

If you want to follow what I did, you’ll need 8 different balls of DK category #3 yarn, but if you’ve got a few smaller balls, you can simply tie in a new colour when the old one runs out!

Have a look in your stash and see what you fancy!

Here are a few alternative options:

Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.5oz, 276m/302yds)

Hayfield Bonus DK, 100% Acrylic (100/3.5oz, 280m/306yds)

Deramores Studio DK, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.5oz, 250m/273yds)

Abbreviations

ch(s) – chain(s)

hdc – half double crochet

MR – magic ring (see special stitches)

rep – repeat

sc – single crochet

sc2tog – single crochet 2 together (see special stitches)

sk – skip

ss – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch

* – repeat the instructions from the * as directed

Pattern Notes

Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.

ch1 and ch2 do not count as a stitch throughout.

The pumpkin is made in joined rounds. A ss is used at the end of each round to join to the first st of the round.

The ss used to join rounds does not count as a st. The ss within the middle section of the pumpkin do count as stitches.

The increase and decrease sections are crocheted without turning, but the middle section is made in turned rounds.

The textured middle section of the pumpkin is made using a stitch called crunch stitch, which is a combination of hdc and ss. This stitch is explained fully in the pattern and in the video tutorial.

The first st of each crunch stitch round is worked into the last proper st of the previous round. You are not working into the ss join, but the final ss of the pattern repeat.

When making the crunch stitch, you may need to tilt your work towards you to see the third loop of the hdc. This will help you distinguish between the hdc and ss and therefore identify which stitch to work into at the start of the round.

When stuffing your big pumpkin, you might find that you don’t have enough toy stuffing, or don’t want to use it for whatever reason! Try instead using these ideas: leftover yarn ends – I had a big jar that I threw in. I also had some old yarn that had gone all matted and I definitely wouldn’t crochet with, so that went in too! I had a few crochet swatches that I didn’t need anymore, and a pillow cover that was surplus to requirements too!

So you can see, there are plenty of different options for stuffing your pumpkin that don’t require much expense!

Optional Adjustments

Try using a different sized yarn or a different number of strands held together and a different hook size! This will change the finished size of your pumpkin.

You can adjust the height of your pumpkin by crocheting more rounds of the central textured section (make sure this is an odd number of rounds).

You can adjust the width of your pumpkin by altering the number of increase and decrease rounds. However, you will need to ensure you still increase and decrease at the same rate, otherwise you will end up changing the shape of your pumpkin too!

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your giant crochet pumpkin pattern.

Magic Ring

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

You can then start crocheting into the ring in the normal way.

Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog)

There are 2 ways to make decreases – watch the standard way here.

In amigurumi, however, you can also use an invisible decrease, which looks much better when working in the round, and is what I have used in this pattern:

  1. Insert hook into the front loop of the first st.
  2. Then straight away insert hook into the front loop of the next st.
  3. Yarn over and pull through both loops (you will have 2 loops on your hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on your hook.

Rounds 12-20: ch2, hdc in last ss from previous round, ss in next st, (hdc, ss) 29 times, ss in first st to join, turn.

Round 21: ch2, hdc in last ss from previous round, ss in next st, (hdc, ss) 29 times, ss in first st to join, do not turn this time.

Round 22: ch1, (8sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [54]

Round 23: ch1, (7sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [48]

Round 24: ch1, (6sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [42]

Round 25: ch1, (5sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [36]

Round 26: ch1, (4sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [30]

Start stuffing your pumpkin at this point and continue as you complete the remaining rounds.

Round 27: ch1, (3sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [24]

Round 28: ch1, (2sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [18]

Round 29: ch1, (sc, sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [12]

Round 30: ch1, (sc2tog) six times, ss in first st to join. [6]

Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a long end. Using a tapestry needle, weave yarn in and out to close hole. Using a single strand of yarn now (approx. 2m long), attach it to the top centre. Wrap the yarn around the outside of the pumpkin and thread the needle up through the middle of your starting MR, pushing it all the way through and out of the centre of the final round. Repeat this at intervals around your pumpkin, pulling the yarn tight each time, until you have created between 6-8 segments on your pumpkin.

This might be quite difficult to do, and you’ll need a large-ish needle to be able to reach it through the pumpkin middle, but if you squash it down hard, it’s doable.

Weave your ends in and out quite a few times to secure.
