How is the Crochet Hook Holder Made?
The crochet hook holder is made out of a simple rectangle. As we crochet the rectangle in basic stitches, we add the classic cable detail to one side.
Once complete the pouch is folded and seamed, before adding a zip (this is definitely the trickiest part!)
And then all that remains is to add your hooks and take your crochet out on a day trip!

You will need:
Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 136m/149yds)
6.0mm Crochet Hook or hook needed for your yarn
Tapestry needle for working in ends
8in (20cm) zip in the colour of your yarn
Sewing needle and thread
Yarn Alternatives
There are so many options for yarn for your Handy Hook Holder. You only need approximately 75yds of bulky weight yarn for this project, so this is a great opportunity to use yarn from your stash.
Here are a few alternative options:
Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky, 55% Wool, 33% Acrylic, 12% Cashmere (50g/1.76oz, 65m/71yds)
Stylecraft Special Chunky, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 144m/157yds)

How to get the pattern
There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet hook holder pattern.
You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.
Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.
PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.
Included in the premium pattern:
- A 9 page downloadable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions
- Detailed stitch guides and tips for perfect results
- Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
- Pattern support if needed
- An accompanying video tutorial
Difficulty level is Easy
Tension:
12 sts and 14 rows of single crochet = 4in x 4in (10cm x 10cm)
To measure your tension, create a sample swatch of at least 16 sts and 16 rows, so that your sample is big enough to measure.
If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Creating your Perfect Hook Holder
The Handy Hook Holder has been designed to fit most standard sized crochet hooks inside. If you would like to adjust the size to your hooks, you can of course do that.
WIDTH: add or remove as many repeats of rows 3-6 as you wish. You will also then need to get a zip size to fit.
HEIGHT: adjust your starting chain as you wish, remembering that the adjusted stitches will come after the cable detail.

Pattern Notes
- Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
- Ch1 does not count as a stitch throughout.
- Stitch counts are given in this pattern in [ ] at the end of each round. Where no stitch count is given, it is the same as the previous round.
- When making the cable detail, you will need to move the stitches out of the way to get to the crossed over stitches behind. Also be aware of the stitch placement as it can be easy to move the cable across without realising.
Special Stitches
Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your easy crochet hook holder.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc)
The Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) is a versatile stitch that adds depth and texture to crochet projects. Instead of working into the top loops like a standard double crochet, the FPdc is worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row, creating a raised effect. This technique is commonly used in ribbing, cables, and intricate textured patterns.
- Yarn over.
- Going from front to back to front again, insert your hook around the post of the stitch below.
- Yarn over.
- Pull the loop back around the post.
- Yarn over and pull through two.
- Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.
- Repeat as required.

Crochet Cables
Crochet cables are a beautiful way to add texture and intricate detail to your projects. Created by crossing front post stitches over one another, they mimic the look of knitted cables. These raised, interwoven patterns add depth and sophistication to blankets, garments, and accessories.
The cables we are using in this pattern consist of a 4 row repeat. The second and fourth rows are single crochet stitches across. In the first row, we make front post double crochet stitches around the posts of the stitches from 2 rows below, which are also front post double crochet stitches. On the third row, we create the crossed over stitches as follows:
- Yarn over and skip the first 2 stitches.
- Insert your hook around the post of the third stitch from 2 rows below, going from front to back to front again. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. (this is the FPdc shown above.)
- Repeat step 2 around the fourth stitch.
- Now go back to the missed first stitch and repeat step 2 here.
- Finally work another front post double crochet around the second stitch by working step 2 again.
Whip stitch
This is a simple way to sew your case closed at the end and I show you how to do it in this whip stitch video tutorial.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming. Fold rectangle in half, so that the cable is on the inside and on one side only. With a needle and a whip stitch, sew the two side seams (if you prefer, you can sew the zip in place before you sew up the side seams).
Turn your Handy Hook Holder the right way round. With a sewing needle and thread, sew your zip in place (you might want to pin it first to make sure it’s in the right place. You will need to unzip the zip to sew the second side).
Weave in all ends, add your crochet hooks and take your holder out for a spin!
