This loose-fitting, sleeveless top is full of beautiful textured stitches and designed with flexibility in mind. Choose from different length options and add ribbing if you want a more fitted finish around the hem or neckline.

Whether you layer it up or wear it on its own, this easy crochet tank top is the kind of piece you’ll want to make (and wear) again and again.

I loved designing this simple crochet tank top. The textured stitch is such a dream to create and will literally fall off your hook! Plus it creates such an interesting and stunning texture.

How do you Make an Easy Crochet Tank Top?

The tank top is made out of 2 panels, a back panel and a front panel. The front has some neckline shaping.

The panels are then seamed together at the shoulders and sides, before optional neckline, armhole and bottom edge ribbing are added.

Yarn

Stylecraft Special DK, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 295m/323yds).

Any DK yarn would work really well for this project.

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your Peaky Tank Top. Any DK yarn would work wonderfully. Consider using a colour-changing yarn, or you could choose to make a striped top by changing the yarn colour every few rows.

Here are a few alternative options that you might consider:

Stylecraft Knit Me Crochet Me, 80% Acrylic 20% Wool (100g/3.53oz, 290m/317yds)

Hayfield Bonus DK, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 280m/306yds)

Brava Recycle, 100% Recycled Acrylic (100g/3.53oz, 280m/306yds)

Swish DK, 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool (50g/1.76oz, 112m/123yds)

How to Get the Pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your sleeveless crochet top pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes mosaic crochet charts, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.

PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.

Included in the Ad-free Premium Pattern:

  • A 13 page downloadable and printable PDF with easy-to-follow instructions in US and UK crochet terms
  • Schematic
  • Detailed stitch guides and tips for perfect results
  • Yarn recommendations and size adjustments
  • Pattern support if needed
  • An accompanying video tutorial

Difficulty level is Easy.

Yarn Amounts

The below yarn amounts are estimates. Any customisations that you make to the pattern will adjust the amount of yarn you need, so make sure you order enough.

XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)

Hip Length with Ribbing

You will need approximately 886 (935, 1038, 1142, 1246) (1350, 1454, 1558, 1661) metres or 966 (1023, 1137, 1251, 1364) (1478, 1592, 1705, 1819) yards of yarn to crochet the hip length sleeveless tank top.

Tunic Length with Simple Edging

You will need approximately 938 (993, 1103, 1214, 1324) (1434, 1545, 1655, 1765) metres or 1027 (1087, 1208, 1329, 1450) (1570, 1691, 1812, 1933) yards of yarn to crochet the crochet sleeveless tunic.

Tension

11 sts and 9 rows = 4in x 4in (10cm x 10cm) using pique stitch.

To measure your tension, create a swatch using the yarn and hook you are planning to use for the project. Make the swatch larger than 4 inches (10cm) so that you can measure a central square.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Customising to Make your Sleeveless Crochet Top Perfect for You

There are lots of different ways to customise your sleeveless top to make it perfect for you:

LENGTH

You can easily adjust the length of your top by crocheting more or fewer rows.

WIDTH

Choose a bust circumference that you are happy with using the measurements below. If none of the sizes are suitable, adjust the initial chain length to any number to suit. If, for example, your hips are quite a bit wider than your bust measurement, consider using a bigger hook size for that section. You can also leave the side seams open a few rows at the bottom.

ARMHOLES

Adjust the size of your armholes by seaming more or fewer stitches on the side seams.

If you want your armhole ribbing tighter, ss into more sts as you work your way round.

RIBBING

If you want your ribbing longer, start with a longer chain.

Pattern Notes

Be sure to read through these notes before you start your crochet sleeveless jumper – they will make it so much easier to understand the pattern!

  • Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
  • Stitch counts are given in this pattern in [ ] at the end of each row or round. Where no stitch count is given, it is the same as the previous row or round. Chains do not count as a st in the st count.
  • A ch3 and hdc in the same st counts as a pique stitch.
  • Sizes are written using brackets in the following format: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL).

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your crochet sleeveless sweater pattern

Pique stitch

The crochet pique stitch creates a beautiful textured stitch that we use throughout this pattern:

  1. Yarn over and insert hook into next chain or stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  3. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and insert into same chain or stitch as before.
  5. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  6. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
  7. To make more stitches, repeat steps 1 to 6 across the row.

You can see this process in full detail in this pique stitch video.

Slip stitch seam

In this tutorial we’ll be working through 1 loop of each panel, but you can work through both for a sturdier seam if you prefer. With 2 panels held together with their RS facing each other:

  1. Insert your hook into the front loop of the st on the panel nearest you and the back loop of the corresponding st on the panel furthest from you.
  2. Yarn over.
  3. Pull through both loops and the loop on your hook.
  4. Continue across your seam.

Fasten off.

FRONT PANEL

Using 4.5mm hook, ch47 (53, 58, 64, 69) (75, 80, 86, 91).

Row 1: using 4mm hook, hdc in fourth ch from hook, pq in each st across, turn. [44 (50, 55, 61, 66) (72, 77, 83, 88)]

R0w 2: ch3, hdc in same st, pq in each st across, turn.

For a hip length top:

Rows 3-49 (50, 50, 50, 50) (50, 50, 50, 50): rep Row 2.

For a tunic length top:

Rows 3-55 (56, 55, 56, 55) (56, 56, 56, 56): rep Row 2.

Alternatively continue repeating Row 2 for the same number of rows as the back panel minus 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) (6, 6, 7, 7).

NECK SHAPING OF FRONT PANEL

Without fastening off, count 12 (15, 17, 19, 22) (24, 26, 29, 31) sts in from where you finished and place a st marker. count 12 (15, 17, 19, 22) (24, 26, 29, 31) sts in from the other side and place another st marker.

Row 1: Continuing from where you left off, ch3, hdc in same st, pq in each st across to first st marker, turn. [12 (15, 17, 19, 22) (24, 26, 29, 31)]

Row 2: ch3, hdc in same st, pq in each st across, turn.

Rows 3-4 (4, 5, 5, 6) (6, 6, 7, 7): rep Row 2.

Fasten off.

Re-join yarn in the st with the second st marker.

Repeat Rows 1-4 (4, 5, 5, 6) (6, 6, 7, 7) above for this side of the neck.

Fasten off. Before moving onto the seaming, block the front and back panels to measurements.

SHOULDER SEAMS

Decide which will be your right side. With RS facing, seam shoulders together using a slip stitch seam. You should have 20 (20, 21, 23, 22) (24, 25, 25, 26) sts left unseamed in the middle of the back panel for the neck hole.

SIDE SEAMS

Using st markers, mark 19 (20, 21, 22, 24) (25, 26, 27, 28) rows down from the shoulder seam on each side, placing the st marker through both front and back panels.

With RS facing, seam side seams from the bottom up to the st marker with a slip stitch seam. If liked, or if making the tunic, leave a few rows un-seamed at the bottom too.

SIMPLE EDGING (optional)

On my tunic version, I added a single row of hdc around the neckline and armholes to finish them off nicely.

NECKLINE RIBBING (optional)

On the hip length version, I added a small ribbing to the neckline, armholes and bottom edge.

Using 4m hook, join your yarn in the shoulder seam.

Row 1: ch4, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, ss in next st of the neckline, turn. [3]

Row 2: sc in blo in each st, turn.

Row 3: ch1, sc in blo in each st, ss in next 2 sts of neckline, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you’ve worked all the way around the neckline. Join the last row to the first row with a ss seam. Fasten off.

ARMHOLE RIBBING (optional)

Join your yarn in the armhole seam.

Row 1: ch4, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, ss in next 2 sts of the armhole, turn. [3]

Row 2: sc in blo in each st, turn.

Row 3: ch1, sc in blo in each st, ss in next 3 sts of armhole, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you’ve worked all the way around the armhole. Join the last row to the first row with a ss seam. Fasten off. Repeat on the other side.

BOTTOM RIBBING (optional)

If you decided to add a slit in the bottom, you will work your ribbing along the front and then re-join and work the ribbing across the back.

Join your yarn in the bottom side seam.

Row 1: ch7, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, ss in next st of the body, turn. [6]

Row 2: sc in blo in each st, turn.

Row 3: ch1, sc in blo in each st, ss in next 2 sts of body, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you’ve worked all the way around the bottom edge. Join the last row to the first row with a ss seam.

Fasten off and weave in all ends to complete.
