How do you make an easy stocking crochet pattern?

We start with the crochet poinsettia pattern to make the granny squares. These are then joined together to form the classic stocking shape.

Then we add a join as you go cuff to the top, followed by a hanger to finish it off.

The only tricky part in this crochet stocking pattern is joining one of the seams, but don’t worry I go through it all in the video tutorial and the written instructions!

Special Stitches

3 treble-cluster

The 3tr-cl stitch is used to create the petal shape. The 2tr-cl is made in the same way with 1 less treble.

  1. Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the stitch.
  2. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  3. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (1 petal part-created).
  5. Yarn over twice, insert your hook into the same stitch.
  6. Yarn over and pull through a loop.
  7. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  8. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 petals part-created).
  9. Repeat steps 5 to 8 again (3 petals part-created).
  10. Yarn over.
  11. Pull through all 4 loops on your hook to complete the 3tr-cl.

Watch how to do the 3 treble cluster here on YouTube.

Stacked double crochet

The stacked dc is a lovely alternative to a turning chain. It creates a cleaner, straighter edge for your crochet projects without gaps or uneven edges. To create a stacked treble, simply stack another single crochet on top.

  1. Insert your hook straight into the very first st of the row/round without chaining first.
  2. Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a single crochet).
  3. Insert your hook now into the vertical bar of the single crochet st that is furthest from your hook side.
  4. Yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through 2 (completing a stacked double crochet).

Watch a YouTube tutorial here.

Invisible join

An invisible join is a ‘fake’ stitch that replaces the slip stitch join and creates a smooth finish.

Cut your yarn leaving a 4” / 10cm tail and pull the tail all the way through the last stitch. Thread this end onto a needle. Insert your needle under both of the top loops of the first stitch of the round, as you would with your hook for a normal sc. Pull tight, but not too tight. Then insert your needle into the top of the last stitch you crocheted, straight down through the middle. Pull tight, but try to make the ‘fake’ stitch you’ve created the same size as the other stitches. Weave in the end to secure.

Magic Ring (MR)

The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my YouTube tutorial above for a visual guide.

  1. Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook.
  3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would.
  4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.

Watch a video tutorial of the magic ring here.

Slip stitch seam

In this tutorial we’ll be working through both loops of each motif and with the stitches showing on the RS. With 2 panels held together with their RS facing you:

  1. Insert your hook into both loops of the st on the motif nearest you and both loops of the corresponding st on the motif furthest from you.
  2. Yarn over.
  3. Pull through both loops and the loop on your hook.
  4. Continue across your seam.

Joining your Squares

With RS facing you, join the squares together as detailed below using a slip stitch seam through both loops of the stitches.

First join 2 rows of 3 squares and then join them into a tube.

Then join 2 more pairs of squares together.

How about making another Christmas design? This Christmas Wreath Crochet Pattern is a quick, stash-busting make that uses up all those little yarn leftovers you’ve been saving.

Whether you’re decorating for autumn or adding a handmade touch to your crochet Christmas wreath, this design blends soft textures, rustic charm and seasonal whimsy in one beautiful project.

Take those 2 pairs and fold them in half along the joined seam, so one square is on top of the other. Join one more square to each to join them together. You will be folding the final squares into triangles and attaching them so they stay as a triangle and join one side to the unseamed edges of the pair of squares. Make sure they are arranged as shown in the image.

Finally join each of the tubes of 3 squares together with the same slip stitch seam method. When joining the second and third tubes together, you will need to use pins to pin the straight tube to the slanted one evenly. The straight tube will overlap the last round of the triangle piece and join to the corner tr.

Finally seam the bottom of the stocking closed.

Stocking Cuff

Join yarn A to the first ch2 at the back of the top edge of the stocking.

Ch21.

Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, ss into next st on stocking, turn.

Row 2: sc in blo in each st across, turn.

Row 3: ch1, sc in blo in each st across, ss in next 2 sts on stocking, turn.

Repeat rows 2-3 all the way around the top of the stocking, working into the ch2 spaces as well as each st. Once complete, join the last row to the first row with a slip stitch seam.

Fold your cuff in half.

Hanger

To add a crochet hanger, ch30. Without fastening off, thread the ch through a st in the back of the cuff where you would like your hanger to be, and then ss into the first st to join into a ring, ss in each ch around, ss in first to join.

Fasten off and weave in all ends to complete.

Alternatively use a twine or leather hanger.
