Yarn Alternatives
This pattern is designed to be used with DK weight yarn, but you can substitute for any that you prefer. Now is the perfect time to use yarn from your stash! I love my version using Patons Fab DK Tweed yarn.
Here are a few alternative options:
- Brava Recycle, 100% Recycled Acrylic, (100g/3.5oz, 280m/306yds)
- King Cole Big Value Tweed DK, 98% Acrylic 2% Viscose, (100g/3.5oz, 290m/317yds)
- Hobbii Daily Stitch, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.5oz, 350m/382yds)
Supplies you will need
3.0mm Crochet Hook or hook needed to match gauge
A tapestry needle for working in ends
Toy stuffing (or use leftover yarn ends)
Size
The Easter egg measures approx. 3.5inches (9cm) long by 3inches (7.5cm) wide at the widest point. However you can really use any yarn and hook to make any size you desire!
Can I Make any Size of Crochet Easter Egg?
You will only need a very small amount of yarn to crochet your eggs, so this is a great opportunity to use yarn from your stash.
Experiment with using different fibres, colours and even different yarn weights. You will need to adjust your hook size to match your yarn if you change yarn weights – the stitches need to be quite tight for this pattern, to ensure the stuffing doesn’t poke through.
Create a whole collection of eggs, perfect for Easter egg hunts, or seasonal home decor.
I already think a massive egg using yarn held double or even triple would look amazing!
How to get the pattern
There are a few different ways that you can get your Easter egg crochet pattern.
You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern for free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.
Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes schematic, stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on too.
PLEASE NOTE: The premium pattern is a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download upon completion of purchase.
Tension:
Gauge is not essential; as this is a small project, make an Easter egg and see if it comes out to the right size.

Magic Ring (MR)
The magic ring is a fantastic way to start crocheting in amigurumi, and any crochet in the round. It can be a bit complicated though, so do check out my magic ring YouTube tutorial for a visual guide.
- Lay the tail end of the yarn over your palm and wrap the ball end around your first 2 fingers. Cross the yarn over and hold that point with your thumb and forefinger. 2. Pull the loop off your fingers, insert your hook into the hole and grab the ball end of the yarn with your hook. 3. Pull the yarn back through the loop. At this point, readjust your hand so you are holding the yarn as you normally would. 4. Put your middle finger and ring finger into the loop to hold it. Then yarn over and pull through to secure your ring.
You can then start crocheting into the ring in the normal way.
Half double crochet (hdc)
- Yarn over and insert hook into stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
To make a hdc2tog, yarn over and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and insert into next stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook.

Pattern Notes
Be sure to read through these notes before you start your Easter crochet egg – they will make it so much easier to understand the pattern!
- Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.
- ch2 does not count as a stitch throughout.
- The egg is made in joined rounds. A slst is used at the end of each round to join to the first st of the round.
- The slst used to join rounds does not count as a st. The slst within the middle section of the egg do count as stitches.
- Some rounds are turned, and some are not, so be careful to follow the instructions at the end of each round.
- The textured middle section of the egg is made using a stitch called crunch stitch, which is a combination of hdc and slst. This stitch is explained fully in the video tutorial and can be seen in Rows 6 and 7 of the pattern.
- The first st of each crunch stitch round is worked into the last proper st of the previous round. You are not working into the slst join, but the final slst of the pattern repeat.
- When making the crunch stitch, you may need to tilt your work towards you to see the third loop of the hdc. This will help you distinguish between the hdc and ss and therefore identify which stitch to work into at the start of the round.
- St counts are given in [ ] at the end of a round. Where there is no st count, it is the same as the previous round.
