Overlay Mosaic Crochet

The snowflake motif featuring on my crochet gift box is made using overlay mosaic crochet.

If you love it as much as I do, you might want to check out my Snowflake Headband Crochet Pattern too!

Overlay mosaic crochet is a beautiful crochet technique, which uses only the single and double crochet stitches to create amazing designs.

Overlay mosaic crochet uses the front loops and back loops to create some amazing designs and colorwork projects. You work each alternate round or row in a different colour using a combination of two stitches: the single crochet in the back loops only; and the double crochet in the front loops only of the stitch two rounds below the current round or row.

The single crochet will always be worked into a stitch of the other colour, whilst the mosaic double crochet stitches are worked into a stitch of the same colour as the one you are using. Amazingly though, we will only use one colour per round or row.

Click here to watch a tutorial on overlay mosaic crochet.

Overlay mosaic crochet is worked from right to left (for a right-handed crocheter) on the front of the work only. This means you would normally need to cut your yarn at the end of each row, and therefore have lots of ends.

Luckily for us, we’re working in the round so we can carry our yarn up the inside of the join.

How is this Crochet Gift Box Made?

This is a made to measure pattern, which you will make to fit your gift box. If your gift is not square or rectangle, use some old cardboard to make a simple box to put your gift in.

We start by crocheting the base of the gift wrap to fit the base of our box.

Once it is the right size, we then start crocheting up the Sides.

About half we up the Sides, we are going to placing our Snowflake motif, which is made using overlay mosaic crochet.

We then finish off the sides of our wrap, until it is the same height as our gift.

Then we crochet 4 ties to make the bow on the top of our box.

Finally we add some edging to complete.

How to get the pattern

There are a few different ways that you can get your crochet gift box wrap pattern.

You can carry on scrolling down and read the pattern free on the blog in US crochet terms. The blog has ads on it, which is how I am able to offer it for free. Please do bookmark the page and come back to it as you work on your pattern though, rather than trying to print it out. Spending time on this page is how I get paid.

Alternatively you can purchase a premium pdf version of the pattern, which includes stitch tutorials, links to lots of video tutorials, schematics and full explanations. The premium pattern comes in US and UK terms. And of course, if you purchase the pattern, it is yours to keep, print and make notes on.

PLEASE NOTE: This listing is for a pdf crochet pattern, written in English. It is not a finished project. You will receive a digital download.

Included in the premium pattern:

A 16 page pdf crochet pattern written in US and UK crochet terms, including images, step by step instructions and guidance.

An accompanying video tutorial.

Stitch tutorials are also included as part of the pattern.

Pattern support if needed.

Difficulty level is Easy.

You will need:

Any Aran or worsted weight acrylic yarn in 2 colours. I used Caron Simply Soft, 100% Acrylic (170g/6oz, 288m/315yds) (Yarn A) and Caron Simply Soft Party 1% Metalized Polyester, 99% Acrylic (85g/3oz, 150m/164yds) (Yarn B)

4.5mm Crochet Hook or hook needed for your yarn

Scissors

Measuring tape

Gift in a square or rectangular box, or cardboard to make a simple box shape

Tension:

14 sts = 4in (10cm) over the snowflake mosaic crochet section. The 13 rounds of the snowflake from Round 4 to 16 of the Sides = 3.25in (8cm).

However tension is not essential for this project as you will be measuring against your gift box as you go.

To make a gauge swatch, make a few of the snowflake motifs from Round 4-16 of the Sides section.

If your sample swatch is bigger than the tension given, try with a smaller hook size. If your swatch is smaller than the tension given, try with a larger hook size.

Yarn Alternatives

There are so many options for yarn for your Snowflake Gift Wrap, but I honestly would recommend using a category 4 medium weight yarn from your stash. This is a great way to use up leftover skeins of anything that you think would work!

I used 1 ball of yarn for each colour, but if you are making a large gift wrap, you will need to adjust your yarn amounts accordingly.

Here are a few alternative options:

Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 184m/201yds)

Brava Worsted, 100% Acrylic, (100g/3.53oz, 200m/218yds)

Pattern Notes

Read through the pattern completely before starting and refer to the stitch tutorials as needed.

This is a made to measure pattern, which you will make to fit your gift box. If your gift is not square or rectangle, use some old cardboard to make a simple box to put your gift in.

Ch1 does not count as a stitch throughout.

The Snowflake motif section is worked in overlay mosaic crochet in the round. There is a mosaic crochet tutorial included in the special stitches.

You will be joining each round of the Sides of your box with a ss into the first stitch of that round. Then, you will pull the new colour through the ss loop on your hook. Make sure to pull the previous colour tight to hide that extra loop. To make sure the join is properly hidden, when you are finishing with an mdc, you can insert your hook into the required front loop and then also into the first stitch of the round before completing the mdc as usual.

Do not cut your yarn at each colour change, but leave it to re-join on the next round.

Stitch counts are not given in this pattern, as you will need to calculate them yourself based on your box measurements. There is help in the pattern on how to do this.

There is a stitch chart at the end of the pdf pattern, showing the snowflake repeating pattern, if you prefer to use a chart over written instructions for that section.

Tips

Be sure to keep the same number of stitches on each round of the Sides. Where you are ss in the 1st st to join, and then joining your new colour, you will need to be careful that you are inserting your hook into the right loop for the first stitch of the next round. Use a stitch marker to help.

This tutorial is written for right-handed crocheters. If you are left-handed, you will be working from left to right around the gift wrap. Because the pattern repeats, you should be able to follow the pattern as it is. Alternatively you can follow the chart only, reading it from left to right, but you will not be able to switch between both the written pattern and the chart together. You will need to use the written instructions for the base and ties.

On Round 13, you will be working some of the mdc in between the points of the snowflake. The front loops of the Round below are hidden, so you will need to lift the slanting stitches out of the way to find where to insert your hook.

The edging goes around the ties and the tops of the sides which are not yet worked into. Work 2sc into the top points of the ties as necessary to keep the ties flat.

Special Stitches

Below are the instructions for all the special stitches you will need for your snowflake gift box pattern.

Mosaic double crochet (Mdc)

  1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the unworked front loop of the stitch from the round below the one you would normally work into (it will be the same colour as the yarn you are using).
  2. Yarn over and pull through.
  3. Yarn over and pull through two loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the stitch.

mdc3tog

This stitch is used to make the bottom 3 points of the snowflake like this: ⩚ You will be working into the same colour yarn as your working yarn. Watch a video tutorial here.

1. Yarn over and insert your hook into the front loop of the stitch from the round below the one you would normally work into and two stitches to the right (or left if you’re left-handed). Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.

2. Yarn over and insert your hook into the front loop of the stitch directly below the one you would normally work into (next but one to the stitch you used already). Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.

3. Yarn over and insert your hook into the front loop of the stitch from the round below the one you would normally work into and two stitches to the left (or right if you’re left-handed) (next but one to the one in step 2). Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.

4. Yarn over and pull through all remaining loops on your hook.

mdc diagonally to the right or left

Rather than working an mdc into the stitch directly below the current stitch, you will work these stitches diagonally to the left or right two stitches, into the middle of the snowflake motif.

Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog)

A single crochet 2 together is also known as a decrease and it is used to decrease the number of stitches on a row. By using an sc2tog you will go from 2 sts down to 1 st and we use this in this pattern to create the bow shape.

  1. Insert hook into the next st.
  2. Yarn over and pull through.
  3. Insert your hook into the next st.
  4. Yarn over and pull through (you will now have 3 loops on your hook rather than the normal 2 for a single crochet).
  5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

I walk through the single crochet 2 together in this tutorial.

Full-length Video Tutorial

If you prefer crocheting from a video tutorial, hop on over to my YouTube channel and watch a full-length video of the crochet gift wrap being made.

This video shows you how to work out the correct size for your gift, as well as taking you step by step through the process of making the base, the mosaic motif and the ties. I also show you how to tie your box once your present is inside.

The Free Crochet Gift Box Pattern

US Terminology.

This is a made to measure pattern to fit the size of the gift you are wrapping. It is based on using a rectangular / square shape box to go inside your crochet gift wrap.

If you do not have a gift box for your gift, you will need to make one first using cardboard and tape to create a box shape.

BASE

Using yarn A, make a chain that is the same length as your box, making sure not to stretch it at all.

Row 1: ch1, sc into the second ch from hook and each ch across, turn.

Row 2: ch1, sc in each st across, turn.

Subsequent Rows: rep Row 2 until you have a square or rectangle the same size as the the bottom of your box.

We are now going to turn and work around the edge of our base shape, but first we need to do a bit of maths.

Count the number of stitches and rows that you have and multiply that by 2. So if you have 26 stitches and 22 rows in a rectangle, you will get 96, which is the number of stitches all the way around the edge of your base.

For the snowflake pattern around your box, we need to have a multiple of 10 stitches. So find the nearest multiple of 10 above your number of stitches around the shape, in this case the nearest is 100. We always round up here, not down. So we need 4 extra stitches. This is easy as we will simply add 1 stitch to each corner.

If your total number is exactly a multiple of 10, then you will just crochet around the base in each st and each row end. If the number of stitches you need to add is between 1 and 3, then you will have to add an extra stitch in only 1-3 of the corners. However, if the number of stitches you need to add is between 5 and 9, you will need to divide the number as equally as possible between the corners, so for 5, you’ll have 3 corners with 1 st, and 1 corner with 2 sts. For 9, you’ll have 3 corners with 2 sts each, and 1 corner with 3 sts.

SIDES

Now that you know the number of stitches you need to make around your base we can start the sides. Do not cut your yarn at each colour change, but leave it to re-join on the next round.

Round 1: ch1, sc around your base as calculated above, ss in first st to join.

Round 2: ch1, sc in each st around, ss in first st to join.

Round 3: ch1, sc in blo in each st around, ss in first st to join.

Now you need to measure how tall your box is. The snowflake pattern is 3.25in (8cm) and you want to place it centrally on your box. So if your box is 4.25in tall, you have 1in remaining which you want to spread evenly between the top and bottom. So you want 0.5in below the snowflake motif and 0.5in above it.

Rep round 3 until the side measures the amount you want.

Join Yarn B, but do not fasten off Yarn A.

Round 4: sc in blo in each st around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 5: with Yarn A, sc in blo around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 6: with Yarn B, rep Round 4.

Round 7: with Yarn A, *sc in blo, 3mdc, sc in blo, 3mdc, sc in blo, mdc, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 8: with Yarn B, *4sc in blo, mdc, 5sc in blo, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 9: with Yarn A, *2mdc, sc in blo, mdc, sc in blo, mdc, sc in blo, 3mdc, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 10: with Yarn B, *4sc in blo, mdc3tog, 5sc in blo, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 11: with Yarn A, *9sc in blo, mdc, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 12: with Yarn B, *2sc in blo, mdc diagonally left to middle, sc in blo, mdc, sc in blo, mdc diagonally right to middle, 3sc in blo, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 13: (see note) with Yarn A, *2mdc, sc in blo, mdc, sc in blo, mdc, sc in blo, 3mdc, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 14: with Yarn B, *4sc in blo, mdc, 5sc in blo, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 15: with Yarn A, *sc in blo, 3mdc, sc in blo, 3mdc, sc in blo, mdc, rep from * around, ss in blo of first st to join.

Round 16: with Yarn B, sc in blo in each st around, ss in blo of first st to join. Fasten off Yarn B.

Round 17: with Yarn A, ch1, sc in blo in each st around, ss in first st to join.

Rep Round 17 until the side is the same height as your box or slightly taller.

Fasten off.

TIES

We are now going to make 4 ties which will be folded, gathered and tied to create a bow on the top of the present. Each tie needs to be placed centrally on each side of the box. You can make your ties as wide or as narrow as you prefer. Narrower ties will show off more of the box underneath than wider ties. It is recommended to make your tie at least 1/2 of the width of each side.

I had 100 sts around my box, which is 25 per side. I made my ties 15 sts wide, so that left 5 sts either side of each tie.

Make 4

Join Yarn A into the first st that you would like to start your tie in.

Row 1: ch1, sc in each st across for the number of sts of your tie (e.g. 15 for me), turn.

Row 2: ch1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rep Row 2 until your tie height reach the other side of the box, e.g. the tie is the same length as your box length or width depending on which side of the box you are working on. Note that if you are making a rectangle, 2 of the ties will be longer than the other 2. Make sure to finish on a WS row, so that when you turn the outside of the box will be facing you for Row 3.

Now we are going to decrease our tie width on one edge only as follows.

Row 3 (RS): ch1, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 4: ch1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 until you have 1 st left.

Fasten off.

crochet gift wrap open to reveal gift inside

EDGING

Round 1: Join Yarn A in any st around the top of your box, ch1, sc in each st all around the top of the box and the ties, ss in first st to join. Fasten off Yarn A.

Round 2: Join Yarn B in any st of Round 1, ch1, sc in each st all around, making 2sc in the points of the ties, ss in first st to join. Fasten off Yarn B.

Weave in all ends. Put your present into the gift wrap.

Cut a length of Yarn A. Gather your ties together and fold over the narrow ends into the middle to look like a bow (see images on page 14). Tie your yarn around the base of the bow and secure.

Place under the Christmas tree and enjoy a Merry Christmas!
