Super Easy Crochet Alien

The Super Easy Crochet Alien pattern has been designed specifically with children and beginners in mind. It’s an easy pattern for children to start to understand how crocheted toys can be made.

I will try to explain all of the terms used, and will write out the pattern in words, as well as using regular crochet terminology underneath to show how it would look in a regular pattern. This is a good opportunity for children to start understanding how to read crochet patterns too.

This is a cute little alien figure, crocheted using the amigurumi technique in the round. It is made up of an egg-shaped body, 2 flat legs with feet, 2 eyes and finally an embroidered (sewn on) mouth.

You can choose the colours you would like to use. You can use one colour for all the pieces, or you could also choose a different colour for the body, the legs, the eyes and the mouth.

What is amigurumi?

Amigurumi is a Japanese word used to describe crocheted stuffed yarny creatures. You will use the amigurumi technique for your alien. This means you’ll be crocheting in a spiral to form the body, making 1 or 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch to change the size of the body. To decrease, you will need to also make single crochet 2 together, where you will crochet into 2 stitches and end up with 1 stitch.

Who is this pattern for?

Anyone who has mastered the very basics of crochet should be able to follow this pattern!

You do not need to be able to read patterns to make your super easy crochet alien. The pattern has been written out in full, as we as in crochet terminology so you should have no trouble there. And there is a full-length video tutorial on YouTube to help you out too.

So let’s get crocheting!

What do I need to get started?

Any chunky yarn in between 1 and 4 colours. I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, 100% Acrylic (100g/3.5oz, 136m/148yds) in Raspberry Pink, Summer Sky Blue and Light Caramel

6.0mm Crochet Hook

Stitch markers

A tapestry needle for working in ends (this is a needle with an eye wide enough to thread the yarn through, and not too sharp).

Scissors

Toy stuffing

Size and Tension

The body size of my super easy crochet alien was 4.5” x 3.5” (11.5cm x 9cm).

The tension is how tightly or loosely you crochet. It is measured as the number of stitches and rows in a 4” or 10cm square. For this project, it doesn’t matter how tightly you crochet, so this is not something you need to worry about here – your alien will just be a slightly different size.

Prefer no ads?

If you’d prefer to have the pattern with no ads, please consider buying the ad-free printable pdf. That way, you’ll have it to keep forever, and can print it off and add your own notes!

What Stitches are used in the Super Easy Crochet Alien?

As this pattern is for complete beginners, I’m going to use this section to link to stitch tutorials that you will need to be able to complete this project. You’ll need to refer back to it whenever you come across something that you’re not sure about.

Pattern Notes

  • This tutorial is written for right-handed crocheters and you will be working clockwise around your alien. If you are left-handed, you will be working anti-clockwise.
  • Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Remove it when you start the next round and move it up as you go.
  • The body and eyes of your super easy crochet alien are crocheted in a spiral shape without turning.
  • The legs are crocheted in rows and you will turn your work after each row.
  • This type of crochet is called amigurumi. Amigurumi is a Japanese word used to describe crocheted stuffed yarny creatures.
  • You will need to keep track of how many rows and rounds you have crocheted. I would suggest stopping after each and making a note, or you can use a fidget popper and pop down a circle after each row or round.

BODY

Make a slipknot with your yarn and put the loop onto your hook. Make 3 chain stitches, and then slip stitch into the first chain to make a ring. Alternatively, if you know how to do a magic ring, you can use this here.

Round 1: chain 1, then make 6 single crochet into the ring, making sure that you also crochet over the tail end of the yarn. [You will have made 6 stitches]

Don’t forget to use your stitch marker in the first of the 6 single crochet stitches.

Pull the tail end to tighten and close the hole in the ring.

Round 2: Starting in the stitch where you put the stitch marker, make 2 single crochet in each of the 6 stitches. Remember to move your stitch marker up to the first stitch of this round. [You will now have 12 stitches around the circle]

Round 3: Starting in the stitch from Round 2 that has the stitch marker in it, make 1 single crochet. In the next stitch, make 2 single crochet, in the next stitch make 1 single crochet, and then in the next stitch make 2 single crochet. Continue alternating 1 single crochet and then 2 single crochet, until you get to the last stitch (the one before the stitch marker). [You will now have 18 stitches around the circle]

Round 4: Starting in the stitch from Round 3 that has the stitch marker in it, make 1 single crochet. In the next stitch, make 1 single crochet, in the next stitch make 2 single crochet, and then in the next stitch make 1 single crochet, in the next 1 single crochet, and in the next 2 single crochet. Continue alternating 1 single crochet, then 1 single and then 2 single crochet, until you get to the last stitch (the one before the stitch marker). [You will now have 24 stitches around the circle]

Round 5: Starting in the stitch from Round 4 that has the stitch marker in it, make 1 single crochet. In the next stitch, make 1 single crochet, in the next stitch make 1 single crochet, and then in the next stitch make 2 single crochet. Continue alternating 1 single crochet in each of the first 3 stitches and then 2 single crochet in the next stitch, until you get to the last stitch (the one before the stitch marker). [You will now have 30 stitches around the circle]

Rounds 6-11: Make one single crochet in each stitch all the way around for 6 rounds, remembering to move your stitch marker up each time you get to it. [You will still have 30 stitches around the outside of the circle]

Round 12: In this round we are going to start decreasing the Body. Make 1 single crochet in each of the first 3 stitches, then over the next 2 stitches, you are going to do a single crochet 2 together (see the video if you are unsure). Repeat this pattern around, alternating 3 single crochet and then one single crochet 2 together. [You will have 24 stitches at the end of this round]

Round 13: Make one single crochet in each stitch all the way around, remembering to move your stitch marker up each time you get to it. [You will still have 24 stitches around the outside of the circle]

Round 14: Make 1 single crochet in each of the first 2 stitches, then over the next 2 stitches, you are going to do a single crochet 2 together. Repeat this pattern around, alternating 2 single crochet and then one single crochet 2 together. [You will have 18 stitches at the end of this round]

Round 15: Make one single crochet in each stitch all the way around, remembering to move your stitch marker up each time you get to it. [You will still have 18 stitches around the outside of the circle]

Start stuffing your alien at this point with the toy stuffing, and carry on filling it up as you do the rest of the rounds.

You will want it to be quite firm, but not overstuffed so that the stitches bulge and you can see stuffing through it.

Round 16: Make 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then over the next 2 stitches, you are going to do a single crochet 2 together. Repeat this pattern around, alternating 1 single crochet and then one single crochet 2 together. [You will have 12 stitches at the end of this round]

Round 17: Make one single crochet in each stitch all the way around, remembering to move your stitch marker up each time you get to it. [You will still have 12 stitches around the outside of the circle]

Round 18: Over the next 2 stitches, you are going to do a single crochet 2 together. Repeat this around, doing a single crochet 2 together every time. [You will have 6 stitches at the end of this round]

Insert your hook into the first stitch, wrap your yarn around your hook, and then pull through the first stitch and the loop on your hook to finish. Cut your yarn leaving a 8” / 20cm tail. Thread it onto a tapestry needle and weave your needle in and out of the 6 stitches at the top. Pull it tight to close the hole and thread the needle inside the body and out the other side. Cut off any ends and the body is finished.

LEGS (make 2)

Make a slipknot with your yarn and put the loop onto your hook. Make 4 chain stitches.

Row 1: make a single crochet into the second chain away from your hook (so not the one right next to your hook, but the next one), and then do a single crochet in the next 2 chains. [You will have 3 stitches in a row]

Row 2: Turn your work around so you can work back along the row. Make 1 chain stitch. Then make a single crochet in each of the 3 stitches from the row below. [You will still have 3 stitches in a row].

Rows 3-13: Repeat Row 2.

If you want your legs to be a different length, repeat Row 2 more or fewer times. It might be helpful to keep count of how many rows you do though, so that you can repeat it on the other leg.

Row 14: Turn your work around and make 1 chain stitch. Make 2 single crochet in the first stitch, then 1 single crochet in the second stitch, and then 2 single crochet in the last stitch. [You will now have 5 stitches across]

Row 15: Turn your work around and make 1 chain stitch. Make 2 single crochet in the first stitch, then 1 single crochet in the second, third and fourth stitch, and then 2 single crochet in the last stitch. [You will now have 7 stitches across]

Rows 16: Turn your work around and make 1 chain stitch. Make a single crochet in each stitch across. [You will still have 7 stitches across]

Row 17: Repeat Row 16.

Row 18: Turn your work around and make 1 chain stitch. Make a single crochet 2 together over the first 2 stitches, then do a single crochet in the third, fourth and fifth stitches, followed by a single crochet 2 together over the last 2 stitches. [You will now have 5 stitches across]

Row 19:  Turn your work around and make 1 chain stitch. Make a single crochet 2 together over the first 2 stitches, then do a single crochet in the third stitch, followed by a single crochet 2 together over the last 2 stitches. [You will now have 3 stitches across]

Cut your yarn leaving a tail for weaving in. Then make a chain stitch pulling the yarn all the way through the stitch to fasten off your work. Using your tapestry needle, weave the ends in and out of a few stitches to secure it, and cut off any leftover.

EYES (Make 2)

Make a slipknot with your yarn leaving about a 4” / 10cm tail, and put the loop onto your hook.

Insert your hook into the first stitch, wrap your yarn around your hook, and then pull through the first stitch and the loop on your hook to finish. Cut yarn, leaving a 4” / 10cm tail. With the tail end that is sticking out of the middle of your eye, thread a tapestry needle. Push the needle through the stitches around the inner circle a few times to fasten off, then cut any leftovers. Leave the tail from the outside of your eye to sew to the Body.

MAKING UP

Take your needle and thread the tail on the eye onto the needle. Position your eyes where you would like them to go and sew them in place by going in and out of the stitches around the outside of the eye and also into the body underneath. Do the same with the other eye. (Remember an alien’s eyes might not always be in the same place as human eyes, and they might not be level either).

For the legs, thread the tail of the yarn onto your needle and place the legs underneath the body. Sew the leg to the body by weaving in and out of the top rows of the leg and into the body. Then do the same with the other leg.

If you have any other ends of yarn still showing, weave them into the alien now, going in and out for a few stitches until it is secure.

For the mouth, thread a needle with the colour you’d like, and sew a smile however you like across your alien’s face. If you grab a pencil and draw it on lightly first, then you can sew over your line.

And so your super easy crochet alien is finished! Show it off and be proud of it!
