Crochet Design Tips

Save Money as a Crochet Designer

Starting out (or continuing) as a crochet designer can be very costly. You have the cost of materials and we all know yarn can be very expensive these days. But then there’s also the cost of your time, photography equipment, website fees, insurance, advertising, social media… you get the picture! Those costs just keep adding up. So here are 10 innovative ways you can save money as a crochet designer, whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned designer!

Why would I need to save money?

A massive problem when starting out as a crochet designer, is that you aren’t earning revenue straight away. You will spend a lot of time creating new designs, writing patterns, writing blogposts, creating an audience, marketing your patterns and yourself, before you start to bring in any money, and sometimes this can take years.

That’s why you need to take any ways to save money at this stage very seriously!

My story

I’d like to take the opportunity here to be very frank with you. I’ve been a crochet tech editor for a while now, and have a few regular clients, along with others who I work with now and then. So, I’m making an income!

I started designing my own patterns towards the end of 2023, so at the point of writing it hasn’t been very long. It has been a huge learning curve, not only from the actual design perspective, but also all of the other things that go into bringing a pattern to you guys. There is the marketing, the pattern editing, the tech editing, pattern testing, Pinterest, filming, photography. And so much more!

You can’t just make a pattern and expect it to magically sell. If only!

I’m going to be frank. At this stage, I’ve only sold a handful of patterns, nowhere near covering the amount of time I’ve spent on them! But it’s early days and I have faith that it’s all going to ramp up, especially with everything I’ve learnt.

10 ways to save money

And that is why I’ve created this document, because it takes a lot of time to research the best ways to do things for very little money! So I’ve done it for you, and can now share it!

I’ve used all of my designer and tech editing experience to put together this list! I’ve even included my list of the best free apps to use for your crochet design business, so you don’t want to miss out.
